I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Cancun y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The Cancún area, which in Mayan means 'snake nest', was a territory of the Mayan civilization, although it was not a large center like Chichén Itzá or Tulum. Small archaeological sites such as El Rey and San Miguelito indicate that it was an area inhabited by fishermen and that it was important in the Mayan maritime trade routes.
Until the 1970s, Cancun was a nearly uninhabited sand dune island, with only a few coconut trees and a small fishing community. In 1969, the Mexican government, through its tourism fund (FONATUR), selected this virgin place, using computer analysis, to turn it into a planned world-class tourist destination.
Construction began in the early 1970s, with the creation of the Hotel Zone on the island and the development of the residential city on the mainland ('The Centre'). The first hotel opened in 1974. Since then, Cancún has grown to become the most recognized tourist destination in Mexico and one of the most visited in the world, an economic engine for the region based on sun, beaches and entertainment.
La cronología histórica muestra los momentos clave que han definido el desarrollo de Cancun a lo largo de los siglos.
