I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de vegas y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The area was originally a desert oasis inhabited by the Paiute. The name 'Las Vegas' was coined by Spanish explorers in 1829 because of its meadows and springs. For years it was a stop on the Old Spanish Trail trade route.
Officially founded in 1905 as a railroad stop, its growth took off with the legalization of gambling in 1931 and the construction of the nearby Hoover Dam. Starting in the 1940s, mafia investment transformed the city into the country's leading gambling destination, building iconic casinos such as the Flamingo and the Sands.
Starting in the 1980s, the city began a transformation to get rid of its mafia image and attract a broader, family-oriented audience, led by the era of themed megaresorts such as The Mirage and The Venetian. Today, Las Vegas is an entertainment capital of the world, focusing on gaming as well as dining, shows, conventions and luxury experiences.
