View full guideThe official currency is the Honduran Lempira (HNL). In the Bay Islands (Roatán and Útila) and in Copán Ruinas, the United States Dollar (USD) in cash is widely accepted in dive centers, hotels and restaurants (banknotes must be in perfect condition, without tears or marks). Credit cards are accepted in tourist areas and supermarkets, but it is essential to carry cash in Lempiras for motorcycle taxis, street stalls and rural villages.
To travel to the Bay Islands from La Ceiba there are modern fast sea ferries (the Galaxy Wave to Roatán and the Utila Dream to Útila). To travel between Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Roatán and Copán there are local airlines with internal flights (CM Airlines and Aerolíneas Sosa) and comfortable and safe executive bus lines (such as Hedman Alas).
The main tourist destinations in Honduras (Copán Ruinas, Roatán, Útila, Cayos Cochinos, Lago de Yojoa and towns on the Lenca Route) have a dedicated Tourist Police and are safe for international travelers. It is advisable to use common sense: avoid traveling at night by road between large cities, use taxis recommended by hotels in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa and do not display objects of great value in crowded areas.
