Festivals & Events

The Belize Barrier Reef is an underwater paradise. In addition to the Great Blue Hole, the Glover's Reef and Turneffe Atolls stand out with vertical coral walls, and the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, perfect for diving among gardens of gorgonians and tropical fish in crystal-clear waters.

Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) offers a lively dining scene, beachfront resorts, and direct access to the reefs. Caye Caulker captivates with its bohemian and relaxed spirit; while in the south, the Placencia peninsula displays kilometers of golden beaches of fine sand and small fishing villages.

The Mayan legacy extends throughout the country: Caracol deep in the Chiquibul Reserve; Xunantunich with views of the border; Lamanai, accessible after an exciting boat trip along the New River watching crocodiles; and Altun Ha, birthplace of the famous Mayan pendant carved in jade of the Sun God.

Dive or Fly Over the Great Blue Hole

Located in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, this colossal circular marine sinkhole more than 300 meters in diameter and 125 meters deep is one of the icons of world diving, popularized by Jacques Cousteau. Diving among its gigantic submerged stalactites or contemplating from a small plane its hypnotic contrast of deep navy blue surrounded by turquoise corals is an unrepeatable visual experience.

Swim among Sharks and Rays at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan Marine Reserve, near Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, is a protected marine sanctuary teeming with life. Equipped with snorkel and fins, diving into Shark Ray Alley allows you to swim in shallow waters surrounded by dozens of docile nurse sharks, giant whip rays, multicolored parrotfish and hawksbill turtles in complete freedom.

Venture into the Mystical Mayan Cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)

Considered one of the most fascinating caves in the world by National Geographic, the ATM expedition combines hiking through the jungle, swimming in underground rivers and climbing over limestone rocks to reach hidden ceremonial chambers. There lie intact ancient Mayan ceramics and qualified human skeletons, highlighting the 'Crystal Maiden', whose bones shine from the calcite accumulated over centuries.

Climb to Xunantunich Castle and Discover Caracol

Navigating the Mopán River on a hand-cranked ferry gives access to Xunantunich, where the 'El Castillo' pyramid (40 m) offers panoramic views that reach the border with Guatemala. For an even more remote adventure in the Chiquibul jungle, Caracol deploys Caana ('Place in the Sky'), one of the tallest pre-Hispanic structures built by the Mayans.

Live the 'Go Slow' Rhythm on Caye Caulker

There are no motor cars on Caye Caulker; only bicycles and golf carts. Their official motto is 'Go Slow'. Spending the day swinging in a hammock in front of the turquoise sea, tasting freshly grilled seafood at street stalls and gathering at sunset at 'The Split' to watch the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea with reggae music in the background is the definition of disconnection.

Learn to Play Garifuna Drums at Hopkins

The coastal town of Hopkins is the heart of the Garifuna (descendants of indigenous African and Carib shipwrecked) culture. To take part in a traditional percussion class at a local drum school, listen to the hypnotic rhythm of 'Punta' music, and taste a bowl of freshly pounded 'Hudut' is to immerse yourself in one of America's richest cultural traditions.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Language and Communication

English is the official language of Belize and is used in official procedures, signs and businesses. However, in daily life the majority of the population speaks Belizean Creole (Kriol) and more than half are fluent in Spanish, especially in the northern and western regions (Cayo, Orange Walk and Corozal).

Currency and Dual Circulation (Belize Dollar and USD)

The official currency is the Belize Dollar (BZD), which has a fixed exchange rate pegged to the US Dollar of 2 BZD = 1 USD. US dollars in cash are universally accepted in all shops, hotels and restaurants in the country (you often pay in USD and get change in BZD). Credit cards are accepted in tourist areas.

Transportation, Water Taxis and Planes

To travel from Belize City to the main cays (Cay Caulker and Ambergris Caye), the most popular and economical means are fast boats or 'water taxis' (such as San Pedro Belize Express). For long distances or to save time, scenic small plane flights with local airlines (Tropic Air and Maya Island Air) are fast and offer spectacular views of the reef.
