Discover the rich history, art and traditions of Honduras

Honduras is a fascinating country located in the center of Central America, bathed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea and with access to the Pacific Ocean in the Gulf of Fonseca. It is world-renowned for the extraordinary Copán Archaeological Park (with the largest sculptural work in the Mayan world), the Bay Islands (Roatán, Útila and Guanaja, a diving mecca in the Mesoamerican Reef System), the idyllic virgin archipelago of Cayos Cochinos, the Pico Bonito National Park and the rich cultural heritage of the Garífuna and Lenca peoples.

Festivals & Events

The Bay Islands are the quintessential coastal paradise. Roatán stands out for its white sand beaches in West Bay and diving resorts; Útila is the backpacking capital of accessible diving and whale shark watching; Guanaja seduces with its mountainous tranquility and waterfalls; and the protected archipelago of Cayos Cochinos offers a virgin marine ecological sanctuary free of tourist overcrowding.

The Copán Ruinas Archaeological Park is the nerve center of historical heritage, complemented by the Museum of Mayan Sculpture (which houses the full-scale replica of the Rosalila Temple) and the archaeological site of Las Sepulturas. In the Sula Valley, the Los Naranjos Archaeological Park allows you to explore Mayan and Lenca roads that are more than 3,000 years old on the shores of the lake.

Pico Bonito National Park offers waterfalls and hanging bridges over the jungle; the Montaña de Celaque National Park protects cloud forests where Cerro Las Minas (2,870 m) is crowned; and the Río Plátano Man and Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) in La Mosquitia constitutes one of the largest areas of virgin tropical forest in Central America.

Decipher the Mayan Mysteries in Copán Ruinas

Known as the 'Athens of the Mayan World' for the unsurpassed fineness of its sculptures in green tuff volcanic stone, Copán is a UNESCO archaeological jewel. Walking through the Great Plaza among 3D carved steles that portray the kings of the Yax Kuk Mo dynasty, contemplating the famous Hieroglyphic Staircase (the longest preserved Mayan hieroglyphic text) and descending through the underground tunnels of Rosalila while free scarlet macaws fly over the ruins is an unforgettable trip to the pre-Hispanic past.

Dive with Whale Sharks and Reefs in the Bay Islands

The islands of Roatán and Útila are part of the second largest barrier reef on the planet. Útila is famous internationally for being one of the most affordable and prestigious places in the world to obtain diving certifications (PADI/SSI) and for frequent encounters with the majestic whale shark in the open sea. For its part, Roatán dazzles with coral gardens accessible from beaches like West Bay, submerged shipwrecks and vibrant marine life of hawksbill turtles, eagle rays and giant groupers.

Disconnect in the Virgin Paradise of Cayos Cochinos

This protected archipelago of 13 small cays with white sand and phosphorescent turquoise waters is one of the best preserved marine reserves in the Caribbean. In Cayo Menor, hikers look for the enigmatic endemic pink boa, while in Cayo Chachahuate they coexist with a community of Garifuna fishermen, tasting freshly caught fried fish with tostones and coconut milk on the sand.

Rafting and Adventure in Pico Bonito National Park

The Cangrejal River, which descends steeply from the cloud forests of the Nombre de Dios mountain range, is one of the best whitewater settings in Central America. Descending its class III, IV and V rapids between gigantic white granite rocks surrounded by the jungle canopy of Pico Bonito combines pure adrenaline with hanging bridges, hidden waterfalls and toucan watching.

Venture to Pulhapanzak Waterfalls and Lake Yojoa

Lake Yojoa is the only natural volcanic lake in Honduras, surrounded by coffee plantations and national parks ideal for watching more than 500 species of birds. Nearby, the Pulhapanzak waterfall surprises with its imposing 43-meter drop over the Lindo River, where the most daring can zipline over the waterfall or take a guided tour behind the curtain of roaring water to hidden caves.

Travel the Magical Lenca Route in Gracias and Santa Rosa

Western Honduras preserves a calm and authentic colonial atmosphere. In Gracias, at the foot of the imposing Celaque National Park (the highest peak in the country), you can visit the San Cristóbal Fortress and relax in natural hot springs. Nearby, Santa Rosa de Copán captivates with its cobblestone streets, tobacco farms, native cuisine and world-renowned specialty cafes.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Currency and Payments (Lempira and USD Dollars)

The official currency is the Honduran Lempira (HNL). In the Bay Islands (Roatán and Útila) and in Copán Ruinas, the United States Dollar (USD) in cash is widely accepted in dive centers, hotels and restaurants (banknotes must be in perfect condition, without tears or marks). Credit cards are accepted in tourist areas and supermarkets, but it is essential to carry cash in Lempiras for motorcycle taxis, street stalls and rural villages.

Transport, Ferries and Internal Flights

To travel to the Bay Islands from La Ceiba there are modern fast sea ferries (the Galaxy Wave to Roatán and the Utila Dream to Útila). To travel between Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Roatán and Copán there are local airlines with internal flights (CM Airlines and Aerolíneas Sosa) and comfortable and safe executive bus lines (such as Hedman Alas).

Security and Common Sense

The main tourist destinations in Honduras (Copán Ruinas, Roatán, Útila, Cayos Cochinos, Lago de Yojoa and towns on the Lenca Route) have a dedicated Tourist Police and are safe for international travelers. It is advisable to use common sense: avoid traveling at night by road between large cities, use taxis recommended by hotels in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa and do not display objects of great value in crowded areas.
