History
Origins
Founded around 660 BC. Like Byzantium by Greek settlers, the city was incorporated into the Roman Empire. In 330 AD, Emperor Constantine the Great refounded it as 'Nova Roma', making it the capital of the Roman Empire and renaming it Constantinople.
Development
As the capital of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years, it was the center of Orthodox Christianity and a beacon of culture, culminating in the construction of Hagia Sophia. In 1453, it was conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, becoming the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Under Ottoman rule, the city flourished again as a center of Islamic power, art and magnificent architecture.
Modern era
With the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the founding of the Republic of Türkiye in 1923, the capital was moved to Ankara. Despite this, officially renamed Istanbul has remained the economic, cultural and demographic heart of the country, a global megacity in constant transformation.

Visit a Historical 'Hamam'
For an authentic Turkish bath experience, avoid the more touristy hamams and look for a historic one like the one in Çemberlitaş or Kılıç Ali Paşa. It is a cultural and relaxing experience.
Explore the Asian Side
Most tourists stay on the European side. Take a ferry to Kadıköy or Üsküdar to discover a more relaxed atmosphere, incredible markets and real local life.
Dress for the Mosque
To enter a mosque, women must cover their heads, shoulders and knees. Men must wear long pants. In the most touristy mosques they usually lend scarves ('hijabs') and skirts.
Accept the Tea
Tea ('çay') is a symbol of hospitality. If a salesperson in a store offers you tea while you look at their products, accept it. It is a gesture of kindness, not an obligation to purchase.
Drink Bottled Water
Although the tap water is chlorinated, most locals and all tourists drink bottled water to avoid stomach problems.
Public Baths ('Tuvalet')
Many public baths, even in mosques, have a fee (a small amount). They are usually a mix of Western-style toilets and Turkish-style latrines.
The Shoeshine Scam
A shoeshine boy will 'accidentally' drop his brush in front of you. If you pick him up, he will insist on cleaning your shoes for free and then demand an exorbitant amount from you. Ignore him and keep walking.
Beware of Taxis
Always use official yellow taxis and demand that they put the meter on. It is better to use apps like BiTaksi or Uber (which works with local taxis) to avoid problems.
