Festivals & Events
The immense Lake Issyk-Kul ('hot lake') never freezes in winter and offers resorts, hot springs and beaches in the north (Cholpon-Ata) and pristine canyons in the south. Lake Song-Kul is the epicenter of yurt life at over 3,000 metres, while remote Lake Kel-Suu dazzles sandwiched between vertical limestone cliffs near the Chinese border.
For hikers, Kyrgyzstan is a paradise. Highlights include the route from Karakol to the Ala-Kul glacial lake (3,560 m) and the Altyn-Arashan hot springs; the Ala-Archa National Park near the capital; and the base camp of the legendary Lenin Peak (7,134 m) in the Pamir-Alay mountain range in the south.
The vestiges of the ancient caravan routes mark the territory: the Caravanserai of Tash Rabat in Naryn; the Burana Tower (11th century minaret that was part of the city of Balasagun) next to its field of nomadic funerary steles ('balbals'); and the mausoleums of the Qarakhanid dynasty in Uzgen.
Sleep in a Traditional Yurt on Lake Song-Kul
Located at more than 3,000 meters above sea level on a plateau surrounded by gentle hills, Song-Kul is the beating heart of Kyrgyz semi-nomadic life. Spending the night in a felt yurt ('boz-ui') heated by a wood stove, sharing tea with local shepherds, watching hundreds of horses gallop at dawn and marveling at a crystal-clear Milky Way without light pollution is the country's defining experience.
Hiking among Glaciers in Ala-Archa
Just 40 minutes south of Bishkek, Ala-Archa National Park is the gateway to the high Tian Shan Mountains. Its trails ascend through forested canyons flanked by fir and juniper trees ('archa') to thundering waterfalls, the Ratsek mountain refuge and dizzying viewpoints towards the Ak-Sai glacier and peaks exceeding 4,800 meters in altitude.
Explore the Tash Rabat Stone Caravanserai
Nestled in a remote and lonely valley in Naryn province, a short distance from the Chinese border, Tash Rabat is an impressive 15th century fortress-monastery built entirely of stone. Its domes, vaulted passageways and underground chambers offered safe haven to merchants and camel caravans crossing the icy passes of the Silk Road.
Discover the Cultural Fusion of Karakol
Karakol, on the eastern edge of Issyk-Kul, is a fascinating historical melting pot. Highlights include the Dungan Mosque, built of wood by Chinese Muslims at the beginning of the 20th century without using a single metal nail and in the shape of a Buddhist pagoda, as well as the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, surrounded by apple orchards.
Tour the Red Canyons of Skazka and Jeti-Oguz
On the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, the landscape changes radically. The Skazka Canyon ('Fairy Tale Canyon') dazzles with clay labyrinths sculpted by the wind in the shapes of castles and dragons in shades of red, ocher and purple. Nearby, the Jeti-Oguz Gorge displays colossal red sandstone cliffs known as 'The Seven Bulls' and 'The Broken Heart'.
Live the Excitement of Kok-Boru and Falconry with Eagles
The horse is the soul of the Kyrgyz people. Witnessing a Kok-Boru match (the traditional equestrian sport where two teams on horseback compete with mastery and physical skill) or attending a 'salburun' demonstration with 'berkutchi' hunters who train golden eagles in the villages of Bokonbayevo reveals a man-animal connection unique in the world.

Community Tourism (CBT) and Yurt Stays
Kyrgyzstan has one of the most developed and awarded Community Based Tourism (CBT) networks in the world. Through their local offices in towns and valleys, it is possible to hire local guides, rent horses, organize porters and stay in authentic rural family houses ('homestays') or yurt camps, directly supporting the local economy.
Transportation, Marshrutkas and Shared Taxis
To move between cities and towns, 'marshrutkas' (very cheap public minibuses that leave from the stations when they are full) or shared taxis are used, where you pay per seat. To access remote mountain areas such as Song-Kul, Tash Rabat or Kel-Suu, it is essential to hire a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle with a driver or rent it on your own.
Currency, Payments (Kyrgyz Som) and Connectivity
The official currency is the Kyrgyz Som (KGS). In Bishkek and Osh, credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, but as soon as you go to valleys and mountain towns, cash payment is essential. Local SIM cards (O!, Beeline or MegaCom) are very cheap and offer good mobile data coverage on almost all main roads.
