Historia

History

Origins

One of the oldest cities in Western Europe. Legend attributes its foundation to Ulysses. It was an important Roman settlement called 'Olissipo' and later prospered under Muslim rule before the Christian Reconquest in 1147.

Development

The 15th and 16th centuries marked the Age of Discovery and the golden age of Lisbon. As the center of a vast maritime empire, the city accumulated immense wealth, financing spectacular Manueline-style monuments such as the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. In 1755, a devastating earthquake, followed by a tsunami and fires, destroyed much of the city, which was rebuilt under the Marquis of Pombal with a modern grid plan for the Baixa neighborhood.

Modern era

The Carnation Revolution in 1974 ended decades of dictatorship. Expo '98 was the catalyst for a major urban modernization in the Park of Nations area. Today, Lisbon is a dynamic technological and creative hub, and one of the most popular destinations in Europe.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Discover the 'Miradouros'

Lisbon is full of viewpoints. Don't just stay with the most famous. Look for the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (the highest) or the one in Santa Catarina for a more local atmosphere.

Cross the river to Cacilhas

Take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas to enjoy fresh, cheap seafood in its restaurants and a spectacular view of the Lisbon skyline from the other shore.

Silence during Fado

When a fadista sings, it is a sign of absolute respect to remain silent and not eat or speak until the song is over.

The 'Saudade'

It is a Portuguese word without direct translation, which describes a feeling of nostalgia and melancholy. It is the emotion that permeates the culture and especially Fado.

Tap Water

Tap water in Lisbon is of high quality and safe to drink.

Be careful on Tram 28

It is the number one hot spot for pickpockets. Carry your belongings well stored and ahead.
