History
Origins
Narbonne was founded in 118 BC. such as Narbo Martius, the first Roman colony outside Italy, established in the territory of the Arecomisco Volcas. Its strategic location on the Via Domitia, the first Roman road in Gaul that connected Italy with Spain, made it the capital of the Gallia Narbonensis province. The city prospered as a Mediterranean port until the sedimentation of the Aude River changed the coastal geography, paradoxically preserving its exceptional archaeological heritage.
Development
During the Middle Ages, Narbonne maintained its importance as an archepiscopal seat, beginning in 1272 the construction of an ambitious Gothic cathedral that was never completed due to conflicts with the municipal authorities. The city developed as a commercial and religious center, connected to the Mediterranean by the Canal de la Robine. Its archbishops built the imposing Palace of the Archbishops, which today houses multiple museums, reflecting the ecclesiastical power of the city for centuries.
Modern era
In modern times, Narbonne has been able to value its exceptional historical heritage while developing as a tourist and cultural center.
