View full guideEnglish is the official language of Belize and is used in official procedures, signs and businesses. However, in daily life the majority of the population speaks Belizean Creole (Kriol) and more than half are fluent in Spanish, especially in the northern and western regions (Cayo, Orange Walk and Corozal).
The official currency is the Belize Dollar (BZD), which has a fixed exchange rate pegged to the US Dollar of 2 BZD = 1 USD. US dollars in cash are universally accepted in all shops, hotels and restaurants in the country (you often pay in USD and get change in BZD). Credit cards are accepted in tourist areas.
To travel from Belize City to the main cays (Cay Caulker and Ambergris Caye), the most popular and economical means are fast boats or 'water taxis' (such as San Pedro Belize Express). For long distances or to save time, scenic small plane flights with local airlines (Tropic Air and Maya Island Air) are fast and offer spectacular views of the reef.
