Considered the national dish. It is a thin pancake made of ground yellow peas, filled with bean curry, achard (pickled vegetables) and chutney. It is sold on every corner and it is delicious.
Rougaille
A classic dish of Creole origin. It consists of a thick tomato sauce cooked with garlic, onion, ginger, thyme and chili peppers, to which meat, fish, sausages or even tofu is added.
Mauritian Biryani
Local adaptation of the Indian dish. It is an aromatic rice cooked with spices (clove, cardamom, cinnamon), potatoes and meat (chicken or beef), traditionally prepared in large copper pots called 'deg'.
Millionaire's Salad
An exclusive delicacy made with the heart of the palm tree (palmito). It is served raw, cut into thin slices, with a light dressing. It is called that because to obtain the palm heart you have to sacrifice a palm tree that is several years old.
Renversé Bowl (Dump Bowl)
A very popular Chinese influenced dish. It is assembled in a bowl with a fried egg at the base, followed by sautéed meat and vegetables, and finally rice. When served, it is poured onto the plate creating a perfect dome.
