Flavors of the British Isles

British gastronomy has undergone a revolution in recent decades, leaving old stereotypes behind. Today, it relies on the quality of its local produce (meat, fish, vegetables and cheeses) and a diverse and innovative culinary scene, although traditional, comforting dishes remain at the heart of its cuisine.

Must-Try Dishes

Fish and chips

Fish and Chips

The UK's most iconic takeaway. It consists of a fillet of white fish (usually cod or haddock) battered and fried, accompanied by thick fries. It is usually seasoned with salt and malt vinegar.

Full English Breakfast

A hearty and famous breakfast all over the world. Includes fried or scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, beans with tomato, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast. Regional versions may include 'black pudding' or 'potato scones'.

Shepherd's Pie / Cottage Pie

A comforting, homemade meatloaf. Shepherd's Pie is made with minced lamb, while Cottage Pie uses beef. The meat is stewed in a tasty sauce and covered with a layer of gratin mashed potatoes.

Bangers and Mash

A simple and very popular dish. It consists of good quality sausages ('bangers') served with mashed potatoes ('mash') and covered with a rich onion sauce.

Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (Escocia)

The national dish of Scotland. Haggis is a sausage made from sheep or lamb viscera, mixed with oats, onion and spices. It is traditionally served with mashed turnip ('neeps') and mashed potatoes ('tatties').

Steak and Kidney Pie

A classic meatloaf. Chunks of beef and kidneys slowly stewed in a dark, flavorful sauce, all wrapped in a crispy dough. A delight of pub food.

Typical Drinks

Tea (Té)

The national drink par excellence. Millions of cups are consumed a day, usually strong black tea served with a little milk. It is a fundamental part of everyday British life.

Beer

Ale (Cerveza)

The UK is famous for its 'real ale', a beer that is top-fermented, unpasteurised and served straight from the cask without added carbonation, giving it a complex flavor and smooth texture. The pubs offer a wide variety of local and regional beers.

Scotch Whisky (Whisky Escocés)

Scotland is the birthplace of whiskey, with distilleries spread across the country. From the smoky, peaty flavors of Islay to the smoother, fruitier flavors of Speyside, exploring the world of Scotch whiskey is an experience in itself.

Gin (Ginebra)

Although often associated with Spain, the Gin Tonic is an immensely popular drink invented by the British. The UK has seen a gin renaissance, with hundreds of craft distilleries producing high-quality gins with unique botanicals.

Cider (Sidra)

A very popular drink, especially in the west of England (West Country). Made from fermented apples, it can be sweet or very dry and is incredibly refreshing.

Traditional Sweets

Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam

The star component of 'afternoon tea'. They are quick, slightly sweet buns, served hot. They are opened in half and spread with clotted cream and strawberry jam (the eternal debate is which is put first).

Sticky Toffee Pudding

A moist, fluffy dessert made with dates, covered in a generous warm toffee sauce and often served with vanilla ice cream or custard. It's pure indulgence.

Apple Crumble

A much loved homemade dessert. It consists of cooked and sweetened apples, coated in a mixture of flour, butter and sugar that is baked until crisp. It is served hot with custard.

Eton Mess

A simple and delicious summer dessert. It is a mixture of broken meringue, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Its name comes from Eton College, where it is said to have been invented.
