The official language is German. In cities and tourist areas, English is spoken by a large part of the population, especially by the youngest. Learning some basic German phrases like 'Grüß Gott' (the typical greeting) or 'Danke' (thank you) is always well received.
Tipping is not strictly mandatory, since the service is included. However, it is customary to round the bill up to the next euro or leave between 5% and 10% in restaurants if the service has been satisfactory.
