Emerging from the depths of the Atlantic like a magical bridge between Africa, Europe and America, Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten islands where each one has its own and unmistakable universe. Divided into Windward (in the north) and Sotavento (in the south) islands, this island mosaic defies any monotony: the deserts of golden dunes caressing turquoise waters in Sal and Boa Vista give way to the black basalt peaks and lunar landscapes of the Fogo volcano, or the gorges covered in sugar cane and coffee plantations in Santo Antão. But beyond its astonishing geological diversity, Cape Verde falls in love with its soul: the spontaneous warmth of its people - the famous 'Morabeza' -, the aroma of freshly distilled grogue and the melancholic rhythm of a guitar that sings a morna in any tavern at dusk. Traveling to Cape Verde is surrendering to a slow, luminous and deeply musical rhythm.

Pico do Fogo rises imposingly to 2,829 meters above sea level. Climbing its volcanic ash slopes to the top and sliding down at full speed over the black peak is an unforgettable adventure. In the Chã das Caldeiras caldera, a resilient community lives surrounded by recent lava flows, growing centuries-old vines and fruit trees on volcanic soil.
Accessible only by ferry from São Vicente, Santo Antão is the mecca of Atlantic trekking. Cobblestone paths hand-carved into the rock descend through the Paul Valley, Ribeira Grande and Fontainhas (a village perched on the edge of a green cliff), passing waterfalls, sugar cane terraces, banana plantations and artisanal grogue distilleries.
Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, is the artistic and musical heart of Cape Verde. Cesária Évora's hometown breathes culture around every corner: art galleries, colorful colonial mansions in Praça Nova and traditional bars where local musicians spontaneously gather to play mornas, coladeiras and vibrant funaná until late into the night.
Located on the island of Santiago and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Ribeira Grande (today Cidade Velha) was founded in 1462 as the first European colonial city in the tropics and a key stopover for transatlantic trade. Highlights include the Royal Fort of San Felipe, the stone pillory ('Pelourinho') facing the sea and the ruins of the oldest Cathedral in sub-Saharan Africa.
For lovers of sun, sea and wind sports, Sal and Boa Vista offer postcard-perfect sandy beaches for miles. Santa María (in Sal) captivates with its lively fishing pontoon and crystal-clear waters, while Boa Vista displays the wild beach of Santa Monica (18 km of virgin sand) and the Saharan dunes of the Viana Desert.
Cape Verde is the third most important loggerhead turtle (*Caretta caretta*) nesting sanctuary on the planet. Taking a guided and respectful night excursion between July and October on the beaches of Boa Vista or Sal to see the spawning is magical. Likewise, between March and May, the waters of the archipelago host groups of humpback whales during their breeding season.
Cape Verdean gastronomy is a tasty reflection of its mixed history, based on simple, fresh and comforting foods. It revolves around corn, legumes grown on mountain terraces, daily catches from the Atlantic (fresh tuna, swordfish, grouper, barnacles and lobsters) and a delicious pastry tradition flavored with tropical fruits and artisan goat cheese.
The cachupa is the soul of Cape Verdean homes. Made with crushed white corn and legumes, it is cooked over low heat for hours and shared with family or friends at any everyday or festive event.
The ocean provides daily top-quality bluefin tuna, usually served grilled with garlic or in marinated carpaccio, as well as marine delicacies such as barnacles ('percebes de rocha') and limpets cooked in their shell.
The undisputed national dish of Cape Verde. A stew patiently cooked over low heat that combines several types of shelled corn, beans, cassava, sweet potato, pumpkin, cabbage and an assortment of meats (pork, chicken, beef) and local sausages (linguiça and chouriço).
The morning version of the cachupa left over from the previous day. It is sautéed in the pan with poached onion and butter until slightly dry and toasted, served with a fried egg on top and slices of fried linguiça for a breakfast full of energy.
Thick fillets of freshly caught tuna, marinated in fresh garlic, bay leaf, white wine, lime and paprika, grilled and served with caramelized poached onion, Creole rice and cooked sweet potatoes.
Crispy dumplings made with a thin dough based on wheat flour and cooked sweet potato, filled with a juicy and very spicy minced fresh tuna or mackerel with onion, tomato and plenty of spicy 'malagueta' chili.
Traditional and festive stew typical of the island of São Nicolau, prepared with tender goat meat cooked over low heat with cassava, green banana, sweet potato and aromatic herbs, accompanied by loose white rice.
Aromatic and restorative seafood soup made by cooking whole fresh rock fish with potatoes, cassava, tomato, peppers and slices of green plantain ('banana-pão') that provide consistency to the broth.
The national spirit par excellence, distilled by hand in copper stills ('trapiches') from the fermented juice of pure sugar cane without additives. It is powerful, aromatic and the pride of the Santo Antão valleys.
Sweet and traditional liquor made by mixing artisanal grogue with pure sugar cane honey ('mel de cana'), freshly squeezed lime juice and often flavored with coconut, coffee or passion fruits.

Heroic volcanic wine produced in the Chã das Caldeiras (Fogo) caldera from vines grown on black ash at more than 1,700 meters. The white 'Manecom' (fresh and mineral) and the robust and volcanic reds stand out.

Strela is the national blonde beer, light and refreshing. For its part, the Arabica coffee harvested on the volcanic slopes of Fogo is one of the most select and rare in the world, characterized by its low acidity and velvety body.
Dense and creamy traditional flan made with fresh local goat cheese, condensed milk, fresh eggs and caramelized sugar, achieving a sublime balance between sweet and salty.
The quintessential everyday dessert: artisanal sweet of grated green papaya slowly cooked in brown sugar syrup, cinnamon and lemon peel, served with slices of Fogo cured goat cheese.
Traditional corn and cassava flour cake steamed in a special clay pot ('binde'). It is consumed hot, freshly unmolded, drizzled with melted butter and sugar cane honey.
Rustic jam made with fresh grated coconut pulp cooked with local ripe bananas, cane sugar and nutmeg, consumed alone or on traditional pancakes.
Cape Verde offers an extraordinary geographical and cultural range spread across its ten islands: from desert beaches and global waves to active volcanoes, agricultural valleys and musical epicentres.
Sal and Boa Vista are the kingdom of white sand and turquoise waters. In Sal, Ponta Preta and Kite Beach are world temples for kitesurfing and windsurfing, while the Pedra de Lume salt flats allow you to float in hypersaline waters inside a crater. In Boa Vista, the wreck of the shipwreck Cabo Santa Maria and the dunes of Praia da Chave offer wild maritime landscapes.
Santo Antão is the undisputed paradise of hiking with mythical routes such as the descent of Cova de Paúl or the coastal path from Cruzinha to Ponta do Sol. In São Nicolau, the Monte Gordo Natural Park and the landscapes of Carbeirinho with rocks sculpted by the wind and the sea provide absolute tranquility far from the tourist routes.
Fogo Island impresses with the perfect cone of Pico do Fogo and the black lava landscapes of Chã das Caldeiras, where basalt houses emerge from the ash. The small neighboring island of Brava, the 'Flower Island', captivates with its bougainvillea gardens, perpetual mists and colonial towns such as Nova Sintra.
São Vicente is the cultural capital of the archipelago. Mindelo combines its pastel colonial architecture around the Bay of Porto Grande with its famous Carnival in February (with a marked Brazilian style), live concert halls and the urban beach of Laginha with emerald waters.
Santiago is the largest and most diverse island. In addition to the capital Praia and the historic Cidade Velha, the mountainous interior of Serra Malagueta gives way to the northern coast of Tarrafal and the rabelados communities. The neighboring island of Maio seduces with its quiet fishing villages, salt pans and unspoiled, deserted beaches.
Cape Verdean waters are a hotspot of Atlantic biodiversity. Turtle colonies in Ervatão (Boa Vista), protected seabird sanctuaries on uninhabited islets such as Ilhéu Raso and Ilhéu Branco (home of the Raso's lark), and seabeds of corals and wrecks attract divers from all over the world.
To travel between islands there are two options: regular domestic flights operated by the local airline (BestFly / TACV) or sea ferries (CV Interilhas). It is recommended to plan and book internal flights in advance and leave sufficient time margins in the itineraries, since maritime conditions or wind may cause delays or specific cancellations.
European Union citizens do not need a visa for short tourist stays (up to 30 days), but it is mandatory to register online before traveling through the official government platform (EASE) and pay the Airport Security Fee (TSA), which can also be processed upon arrival at the international airport.
The official currency is the Cape Verde Escudo (CVE), which has a fixed exchange rate linked to the Euro (1 EUR ≈ 110,265 CVE). On tourist islands such as Sal, Boa Vista and São Vicente, the Euro in cash is widely accepted in shops and taxis (often at the exchange rate of €1 = 100 CVE). Credit cards are accepted in hotels and main restaurants, but it is essential to bring cash for the less touristy islands and everyday payments.
Cape Verde is one of the safest and most politically stable countries in Africa. The 'Morabeza' is part of daily life: dealing with the locals is always cordial, respectful and kind. The trade wind blows strongly, especially between December and April, so it is advisable to bring a light windproof jacket for the nights and high sun protection all year round.
This guide is your compass to discover the unique and diverse soul of Cape Verde. Each of its islands keeps a different secret: from the magical silence of its volcanoes and the immensity of its golden beaches to the beat of a morna that caresses the wind at sunset. Plan your island hopping without rushing, let yourself be infected by the 'Morabeza' and get ready for an unforgettable Atlantic trip. Boa viagem (Happy trip)!
