Expériences uniques
Climb to the top of Le Morne Brabant
This mountain not only offers the most spectacular views of the 'underwater waterfall' (an impressive optical effect), but is a symbol of freedom, as it was a refuge for maroon slaves. The walk is demanding but the visual reward over the turquoise lagoon is unmatched.
Swim with Dolphins in Tamarin
The west coast is famous for its pods of dolphins that return to the bay each morning. Participating in an ethical excursion to observe or swim with these animals in the wild is one of the most exciting and connected experiences with nature that the island offers.
Explore Black River Gorges National Park
It is the green lung of Mauritius. With more than 60 kilometers of trails, this park protects what remains of the island's native forests. It is the perfect place to spot endemic birds, such as the Mauritius kestrel, and enjoy panoramic views of deep gorges and waterfalls.
Discover Spirituality in Ganga Talao
Located in a volcanic crater, this sacred lake is the most important place for the Hindu community of Mauritius. Surrounded by temples and gigantic statues of Shiva and Durga, the atmosphere is one of absolute peace, especially during ceremonies where incense and offerings fill the air.
Sail to Île aux Cerfs
A short boat or catamaran ride takes you to this paradise islet. Although it is very popular, its fine sand beaches and shallow waters are the ideal setting for practicing water sports or simply enjoying a grilled lobster lunch under the palm trees.
Get lost in the Port Louis Market
To feel the real pulse of the island, you must visit its capital. The central market is an explosion of colors and smells. Here you can try authentic Mauritian street food, buy local vanilla infusions and observe the everyday mix of cultures that defines the country.
A Melting Pot of Flavors
Mauritian cuisine is a true reflection of its history: a Creole base enriched with Indian spices, French techniques and Chinese flavors. It is an aromatic, varied and deeply tasty gastronomy.

Quality Street Food
Eating on the street is an essential part of Mauritian life. Food stalls offer fresh and affordable delicacies that are the national pride.
The Use of Sugar Cane
The island is covered with cane fields. In addition to sugar, high-quality agricultural rum is produced and brown sugar is used to caramelize many local dishes.
Plats Iconiques
Dholl Puri
Considered the national dish. It is a thin pancake made of ground yellow peas, filled with bean curry, achard (pickled vegetables) and chutney. It is sold on every corner and it is delicious.
Rougaille
A classic dish of Creole origin. It consists of a thick tomato sauce cooked with garlic, onion, ginger, thyme and chili peppers, to which meat, fish, sausages or even tofu is added.
Mauritian Biryani
Local adaptation of the Indian dish. It is an aromatic rice cooked with spices (clove, cardamom, cinnamon), potatoes and meat (chicken or beef), traditionally prepared in large copper pots called 'deg'.
Millionaire's Salad
An exclusive delicacy made with the heart of the palm tree (palmito). It is served raw, cut into thin slices, with a light dressing. It is called that because to obtain the palm heart you have to sacrifice a palm tree that is several years old.
Renversé Bowl (Dump Bowl)
A very popular Chinese influenced dish. It is assembled in a bowl with a fried egg at the base, followed by sautéed meat and vegetables, and finally rice. When served, it is poured onto the plate creating a perfect dome.
Boissons typiques
Agricultural Rum
Mauritius produces some of the best rums in the world. Local distilleries offer tastings of rums infused with vanilla, coffee, spices or tropical fruits.
Alouda
A refreshing and sweet drink based on milk, basil seeds (tukmaria), agar-agar gelatin and vanilla or almond essence. It's the perfect accompaniment to a hot day at the market.
Bois Chéri tea
The most famous tea on the island, grown in the highlands. Vanilla-scented black tea is the most beloved variety and is traditionally served with milk and sugar.
Phoenix Beer
The local beer par excellence. Light and refreshing, it is the ideal companion for any meal in front of the sea.
Desserts traditionnels
Gateau Patate
Small crescent-shaped cakes made of sweet potato and filled with grated coconut and sugar. They are typical of family celebrations.
Neapolitains
Two melting shortbread cookies held together by a layer of guava jam and covered with a pink sugar glaze. They are an irresistible sweet delight.
Tropical Fruits with Salt and Chili
A very common way to eat pineapple, mango or guava is cut into pieces and sprinkled with a mixture of salt, sugar and chili powder. A surprising contrast of flavors.
Que voir par thème
Although the island is small, each cardinal point offers a different atmosphere and landscapes. Here we guide you according to your interests.
Postcard and Luxury Beaches
The north and east are home to the most famous beaches. Grand Baie is the center of leisure and water sports. Belle Mare, in the east, offers miles of white sand and the most exclusive resorts, ideal for watching the sunrise over the ocean.
Wild Nature and Geology
The southwest is the most virgin area. Chamarel is a must-see for its Land of Seven Colors (sand dunes of different shades) and its impressive waterfall. Black River Gorges National Park offers the best hiking on the island.
History and Colonial Heritage
Port Louis preserves French and British colonial buildings. The Aapravasi Ghat is a UNESCO site that tells the story of indentured labourers. Inland, the 'Route du Thé' allows you to visit old colonial mansions such as Saint Aubin.
Marine Life and Diving
The west coast, protected from the winds, is ideal for diving. Flic en Flac has underwater caves such as 'The Cathedral'. In the north, smaller islands such as Coin de Mire offer seabeds full of life and multicolored corals.
Botany and Gardens
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (Pamplemousses) Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere. Its giant Victoria Amazónica water lily ponds and its collection of palm trees from around the world are world famous.

Schedules
Life in Mauritius starts early. Shops are usually open from 09:00 to 17:00. On Thursday afternoons many businesses in small towns close. On Sundays most businesses close early, except in very touristy areas.
Transport
Renting a car is the best option to explore the island at your own pace, but remember that you drive on the left. Public buses are very economical and a cultural experience in themselves, although they can be slow for long distances.
Language
English is the official language (used in administration), but French is the most used in the media and everyday life. However, the mother tongue of almost everyone is Mauritian Creole (Morisyen). The majority of the population is trilingual.
Cultural Respect
When visiting Hindu temples or mosques, it is mandatory to take off your shoes and dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Always ask permission before photographing people in their moments of prayer.
Mauritius is a destination that stays in the heart. Whether you are looking for the adrenaline of wind sports in Le Morne, the peace of its botanical gardens or the taste of its curries, this island offers you an authentic and safe experience. We recommend combining a few days of exploration in the south with total relaxation on the beaches of the east. Enjoy the magic of the Star Island of the Indian Ocean!
