Fez was founded in 789 by Idris I, a descendant of the Prophet who fled from the Abbasids and established the city as the capital of his kingdom. Initially, the city was divided into two nuclei, Fez el-Bali and Fez Jdid, which grew with the arrival of Andalusian and Arab immigrants during the 9th century, who contributed wealth and knowledge. The city became an important religious and cultural center of North Africa, with a diverse population that included Muslims, Jews and Christians.
During the Middle Ages, Fez reached its peak under the Benimerin dynasty, which in 1250 made it the capital of the sultanate, promoting its urban and cultural development.
