Few destinations on the planet condense as much natural magic in a single territory as Uganda. Rightly named 'The Pearl of Africa', this equatorial jewel dazzles with the infinite green of its hills, the immensity of its lakes and an incomparable concentration of wildlife. Here the dense Central African rainforest and the endless savannahs of East Africa come together: in the same trip it is possible to enter the mist of Bwindi to look into the eyes of a mountain gorilla, navigate the Nile River among elephants and hippos, ascend towards the equatorial glaciers of the 'Mountains of the Moon' and descend brave rapids in Jinja. But beyond its overflowing nature, Uganda's true treasure lies in the contagious joy, genuine kindness and open smiles of its people, always ready to welcome you into their home.

Hiking through the dense vegetation of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga National Park to spot a habituated group of mountain gorillas is the ultimate Ugandan experience. Observing for an hour the human gestures of a silverback, the mothers caring for their young, and family interactions in absolute silence is an overwhelming and deeply transformative experience.
In Murchison Falls National Park, the Nile River squeezes violently through a rocky gap just 7 meters wide before falling 43 meters into the void. Traveling up the river by boat to the base of the waterfall allows you to spot gigantic Nile crocodiles, elephants bathing on the shore and hundreds of birds before contemplating the thunderous cloud of steam and rainbows that forms the torrent.
Kibale National Park has the highest density and diversity of primates in East Africa. Walking under the thick jungle canopy guided by the thunderous howls and screams of the chimpanzees culminates in finding them eating figs in the treetops, grooming themselves on the ground or moving nimbly among vines just a few meters from you.
Queen Elizabeth National Park offers two legendary experiences: a cruise along the Kazinga Natural Waterway, which connects Lakes Edward and George with one of the world's largest populations of hippos and waterfowl; and a safari through the Ishasha sector in search of the unique climbing lions resting on the branches of the giant fig trees.
Jinja is the undisputed adventure capital of East Africa. Located at the exact point where the White Nile rises from Lake Victoria, it offers one of the most famous whitewater rafting trips (grades 4 and 5) in the world, as well as kayaking, horseback riding along the riverbank and quad bike routes between local villages.
Located at almost 2,000 meters above sea level and surrounded by terraced hills of crops, Lake Bunyonyi ('the place of many little birds') is a haven of peace with 29 idyllic islands. Being free of bilharzia, crocodiles and hippos, it is the perfect place to swim safely, ride a traditional wood-carved canoe and relax after game drives.
Ugandan cuisine is abundant, natural and comforting, the result of an exceptionally fertile volcanic land that produces crops all year round. It is characterized by the essential use of cooked green banana (Matooke), dense ground peanut sauces, fresh freshwater fish and one of the most famous and beloved street foods in all of Africa.
The green banana is the sacred food and daily food base. It is harvested green, wrapped in fresh banana leaves and slowly steamed over hot coals until it has a smooth and aromatic puree texture that accompanies almost any stew.
The creamy paste of crushed roasted peanuts ('groundnut sauce') is the country's signature sauce. Purple-pink in color, it is cooked with onion, tomato and often with dried fish or wild mushrooms to bathe dough and tubers.
The quintessential traditional banquet, historically reserved for Buganda royalty and weddings. It consists of pieces of meat (beef, chicken or goat) or smoked fish slowly steamed in a sealed package with banana leaves along with peanut sauce and vegetables, accompanied by Matooke puree.
The undisputed queen of Ugandan street food (whose name derives from 'rolled eggs'). A freshly made omelet with eggs, chopped tomato, onion, cabbage and a pinch of salt, hot rolled inside a crispy and tender chapati flatbread.
Consistent and elastic dough prepared by mixing pearl millet flour with cassava flour in boiling water. It is consumed hot with your hands, molding small bites to dip them in substantial meat or vegetable sauces.
Skewers and pieces of marinated meat (usually goat, beef or chicken) grilled over open heat on charcoal grills in street stalls and taverns at dusk, served with roasted plantain ('gonja') or French fries.
Whole freshwater fish marinated with lemon, garlic and ginger, fried very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, served with spiced rice, potatoes and spicy tomato sauce ('kachumbari').
Traditional and unique dish of the Bagisu ethnic group in Mount Elgon, made with tender bamboo shoots dried and smoked over a wood fire, simmered in a creamy peanut and rock salt sauce.
The national distillate par excellence. Originally a homemade banana or sugar cane brandy ('war gin'), today it is a smooth gin with a subtle botanical touch, very popular combined with tonic and lime.
Uganda's most emblematic and award-winning beer, made with water from the sources of the Nile River and local malt. It has a robust flavor, balanced body and a characteristic golden color.

Uganda is one of the world's largest producers of high mountain Robusta and Arabica coffee. Black tea is taken very hot, boiled with fresh milk, sugar and plenty of crushed ginger.
100% natural juice made fresh by blending the pulp of the local passion fruit (with intense acidity and sweetness), served very cold in any cafeteria or restaurant.
Small traditional sweet fritters made only with mashed very ripe bananas mixed with cassava flour and fried in oil until golden brown, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.
The daily dessert is freshly cut seasonal fruit: volcanic pineapples of exceptional sweetness, juicy mangoes, papayas and the gigantic and aromatic 'Jackfruit' (jackfruit).
Sweet yeast dough flavored with ground cardamom and coconut milk, cut into triangles and fried, ideal to accompany morning coffee or snack.
Ripe plantain slowly grilled over charcoal embers, bathed with pure forest honey and a light touch of cinnamon.
Uganda is home to an astonishing variety of protected ecosystems: from impenetrable primary rainforests and glacial peaks to savannahs populated by big cats and mighty equatorial rivers.
Bwindi and Mgahinga are the supreme refuges of the mountain gorilla in the Virunga volcanic range. For chimpanzees, Kibale Forest is the undisputed leader, complemented by Kyambura Gorge (an underground canyon in Queen Elizabeth) and Budongo Forest near Murchison Falls.
Murchison Falls National Park stands out for the spectacular fall of the Nile and river safaris. In the east, Sipi Falls descends in three impressive stepped falls onto the slopes of the extinct Mount Elgon volcano, offering trails between Arabica coffee plantations.
Queen Elizabeth National Park surprises with its volcanic landscapes with craters and climbing lions. In the remote far northeast, Kidepo Valley National Park offers one of the most pristine and isolated savannah experiences in Africa, home to cheetahs, ostriches and large herds of buffalo.
The Rwenzori ('Mountains of the Moon') mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to Africa's third highest peak (Mount Stanley, 5,109 m). Its high mountain hiking routes cross otherworldly landscapes full of giant senecios, lobelias and perpetual glaciers.
The immense Lake Victoria offers trips to the Ssese Islands with white sand beaches. Lake Bunyonyi captivates with its labyrinth of green islands and lack of dangerous currents, and Lake Mburo National Park offers walking, horseback and cycling safaris among zebras and impalas.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda to see southern white rhinos in semi-freedom on walking safaris with rangers. In Entebbe, the Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) and Ngamba Chimpanzee Island carry out vital rescue and environmental education work.
Official permits issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for tracking gorillas in Bwindi/Mgahinga and chimpanzees in Kibale have strict daily quotas. It is essential to book them several months in advance (preferably between 6 and 12 months for the dry season) through authorized agencies or directly with the UWA.
All visas must be processed online in advance through the official Ugandan immigration portal (there is no visa on arrival). If you plan to combine the trip with Kenya and/or Rwanda, it is much more economical and practical to apply for the joint 'East Africa Tourist Visa'.
The international yellow fever vaccination certificate is strictly mandatory to enter the country and is required at the border control at Entebbe airport. Likewise, there is a risk of malaria throughout the country, so it is essential to take antimalarial prophylaxis recommended by a medical center and use repellent with DEET.
The official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). US dollars (issued since 2013 and unbroken) are widely accepted to pay for accommodation and safaris. For purchases in markets, taxis, local stalls and tipping trekking guides and porters, it is essential to carry cash in Ugandan shillings or use ATMs in major cities.
This guide is your passport to explore one of the most fascinating, wild and authentic corners of the entire African continent. Uganda will captivate you from the first moment with the roar of the Nile, the breathtaking look of its gorillas in the fog and the overflowing joy of its people. Plan your routes calmly, respect the wildlife and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Pearl of Africa. Tusanyuse okukulaba (Welcome to Uganda)!
