The city was founded during the Qin dynasty in 214 BC. like a small garnish. A canal was dug connecting the Li River with another river to the north, making Guilin an important transportation link between central China and the south.
During the Tang and Song dynasties, Guilin prospered as a cultural center and its scenic beauty began to attract poets and artists who immortalized its mountains and rivers. In the Ming Dynasty, it became the capital of Guangxi Province, a status it maintained for centuries, cementing its administrative importance.
