Expériences uniques

Living 'Hygge' in first person

'Hygge' cannot be translated, but it can be felt. It is the feeling of warmth and well-being. It is experienced by lighting some candles, enjoying a hot coffee and a 'wienerbrød' in a cozy cafe, sharing a leisurely dinner with friends or simply reading a book under a blanket while it rains outside. Seeking and creating these moments is the quintessential Danish experience.

Explore Copenhagen by bike

The best way to see the Danish capital is the way the locals do: on two wheels. The city is incredibly flat and has an extensive network of cycle paths that make it safe and easy to get everywhere, from the iconic Little Mermaid statue and the colorful harbor of Nyhavn to alternative neighborhoods like Nørrebro or Vesterbro.

Go back in time at Tivoli Gardens

Visiting Tivoli, in the heart of Copenhagen, is much more than going to an amusement park. Opened in 1843, it is a magical garden that inspired Walt Disney, with a mix of vintage attractions, modern roller coasters, beautiful gardens, concerts and a fairytale atmosphere that becomes especially magical at night, when thousands of lights are illuminated.

Sail like a Viking in Roskilde

At the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, you can not only admire five original ships rescued from the fjord, but also live the experience. In summer, it is possible to climb aboard a replica and help row the fjord, feeling for a moment what the life of these legendary sailors was like.

Visit Hamlet's castle

The imposing Kronborg Castle in Helsingør is world famous for being the 'Elsinore' of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. Exploring its Renaissance halls, its dark casemates and enjoying the views of the Baltic Sea (with Sweden on the other side) is an unmissable date with literature and history.

Be a kid again at LEGOLAND

Travel to Billund, Jutland, to visit the original LEGOLAND park. It is a fantastic experience for all ages. The heart of the park is Miniland, where famous cities and places around the world are recreated with millions of LEGO bricks, along with attractions and shows for the whole family.

From Smørrebrød to the Nordic Revolution

Danish gastronomy has undergone a spectacular transformation, going from a traditional and forceful cuisine to leading the vanguard of New Nordic Cuisine. However, the Danes continue to revere their classics. The key is high-quality ingredients, seasonality and impeccable presentation, whether in a simple open sandwich or a Michelin-starred tasting menu.

Smørrebrød: The Art of the Open Sandwich

'Smørrebrød' is much more than a slice of bread. It is a culinary canvas, typically made of rye bread ('rugbrød'), on which ingredients such as marinated herring, roast beef, prawns or pâté are carefully arranged. Eating it is a ritual that requires a knife and fork.

New Nordic Cuisine

A culinary movement started in Copenhagen that prioritizes local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients, reinterpreting traditional recipes with innovative techniques. It has put Denmark on the world gastronomic map.

Plats Iconiques

Stegt flæsk med persillesovs

Voted the national dish of Denmark. It consists of thick slices of pork belly fried until crispy, served with boiled potatoes and a creamy parsley sauce. It is the quintessence of Danish comfort food.

Frikadeller

Danish meatballs, traditionally made from a mix of pork and beef. They are flatter than other meatballs and are fried in butter until golden brown. A classic on any family table.

Sild (Herring)

The king fish of the 'frokost' (lunch) table. It is served marinated in an infinite number of styles: curried, with dill, in vinegar... Always on rye bread and often accompanied by a 'snaps' (brandy).

Pølser (Sausages)

The Danish hot dog is an institution, sold in the characteristic 'pølsevogn' (sausage stands). Red sausage ('røde pølser') is a classic, and is served with all kinds of toppings such as crispy fried onion, pickles and remoulade.

Wienerbrød (Danish Pastry Shop)

Known internationally as 'Danish pastry', it is a buttery, laminated puff pastry that comes in multiple shapes and with cream, jam or nut fillings. It is the perfect accompaniment to a 'hyggeligt' coffee.

Hons i asparges

A retro but much loved dish. It is a creamy chicken and white asparagus stew, traditionally served in 'tarteletter', crispy puff pastry tartlets.

Boissons typiques

Øl (Beer)

The Danes are great lovers of beer. In addition to the world-famous Carlsberg and Tuborg, the country has an incredibly vibrant craft beer ('håndbryg') scene, with microbreweries around every corner.

Akvavit (Snaps)

The traditional spirit of Scandinavia, a potato or grain-based spirit, flavored mainly with cumin or dill. It is served very cold in small glasses and is the indispensable companion to herring.

Hyldeblomstsaft (Elderflower Juice)

An incredibly popular and refreshing drink. It is an elderflower cordial that is mixed with water, often sparkling. Its floral and sweet flavor is the taste of Danish summer.

Gløgg

The drink of winter and Christmas. It is a hot red wine spiced with cinnamon, cloves and cardamom, to which raisins and chopped almonds are added. A splash of brandy or rum is often added to enhance it.

Desserts traditionnels

Rødgrød med fløde

A classic summer dessert, famous for being a tongue twister for non-Danes. It is a compote or pudding of red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, currants) that is served with a generous splash of liquid cream.

Risalamande

The traditional Danish Christmas Eve dessert. It is a cold rice pudding, enriched with whipped cream, vanilla and chopped almonds, and served with a hot cherry sauce. A whole almond is hidden and whoever finds it wins a prize.

Kransekage

A spectacular celebration cake, especially for New Years and weddings. It is made with baked marzipan rings that are stacked to form a cone, decorated with white icing. It is dense, sweet and delicious.

Æbleskiver

Some balls of fried dough, similar to fritters or spherical pancakes. They are a typical Christmas sweet and are served hot, sprinkled with icing sugar and with strawberry or raspberry jam for dipping.

Que voir par thème

The wealth of Denmark lies in its ability to offer very varied experiences in an accessible territory. Next, we suggest you explore the country through different topics.

Design, Architecture and Urbanism

Copenhagen is the world capital of design. From the classics at the Designmuseum Danmark to masterpieces of modern architecture such as the Opera House, the Royal Library ('The Black Diamond') or the sustainable neighborhood of Ørestad. Bicycle culture is the best example of its people-centered urban design.

Vikings and Kings Route

Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings at the Roskilde Museum, the Jelling rune stones (Denmark's 'birth certificate') or the Lindholm Høje cemetery. The royal legacy is explored at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen and the many castles dotted around the country.

Art among Nature

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen, is a must-see, famous both for its collection and its spectacular integration into a seaside sculpture garden. In Aarhus, the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum stands out for the 'Your Rainbow Panorama' circular walkway on its rooftop.

Charming Islands

Denmark is a country of islands. Funen ('Fyn') is known as the Garden Island of Denmark and is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Smaller and more bucolic, islands like Ærø, with its colorful houses and beach huts, or Bornholm, with its unique light and round churches, offer an idyllic getaway.

Coastal Landscapes and Natural Phenomena

The Jutland Peninsula offers surprising landscapes. At Skagen, the northernmost point, you can witness the collision of the Baltic and North Seas. On the island of Møn, the white cliffs of Møns Klint plunge into the turquoise sea. And the west coast is a paradise for lovers of wild beaches and dunes.

Conseils de voyage

Cost of living

Denmark is a country with a high standard of living and, therefore, expensive for the traveler. Plan your budget in advance, especially for accommodation and meals. Shopping at supermarkets and having picnics can be a good way to save.

Internal Transportation

The public transport network is extremely efficient. Trains connect all major cities quickly and comfortably. Within cities, the use of bicycles is the most recommended and popular option. Tickets are often purchased through apps.

Language

The official language is Danish. However, the Danes have an exceptionally high level of English, and the majority of the population speaks it fluently, so communication is very easy for tourists.

Tips

Tipping is not mandatory or expected, as the service is always included in the bill in restaurants and taxis. If the service has been exceptional, rounding up the bill is acceptable, but it is not standard practice.

This guide is just the beginning of your adventure in the oldest kingdom in Europe. Each island and city has its own character, from the sophistication of Copenhagen to the rustic charm of its fishing villages. We invite you to explore more, pedal aimlessly and discover your own 'hygge' moment. God rejse! (Have a good trip!)
