Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Nantes y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The origins of Nantes date back to Roman times, when it was known as Condevicnum, an important settlement in the region of ancient Gaul. Before Romanization, the area was inhabited by Celtic tribes. In the 9th century, Nantes was taken by the Vikings, who established a Norman principality for almost two decades. In 937, the Breton Duke Alain Barbetorte expelled the Vikings and established the city as the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, marking the beginning of its political and strategic importance in the region.
During the Middle Ages, Nantes established itself as a key commercial and political center in Brittany. In the 15th century, the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany became the residence of princes and dukes, reflecting the power of the city. The union of Brittany with France at the end of the 15th century, through the marriages of Anne of Brittany with the French kings, integrated Nantes into the French kingdom. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Nantes prospered as an important port, especially in the Atlantic trade, although it was also involved in the slave trade. The French Revolution marked a period of conflict, highlighting the defense of Nantes during the Vendée War.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Nantes experienced strong industrial development, becoming one of the main industrial centers in western France. The city was damaged during World War II, but was quickly rebuilt and modernized. In recent decades, Nantes has opted for urban and cultural innovation, standing out for sustainability projects, technological development and promotion of contemporary art. Currently, it is a benchmark in France for its quality of life, its cultural offer and its role as an economic and educational engine in the region.
