General Travel Guide: The Land of Amber and the Singing Forests
Latvia is a country that sings. Its soul resonates in the massive choirs of its festivals and in the whisper of the wind through its immense pine forests. It is a land where the cosmopolitan elegance of Riga, with the largest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world, contrasts with the wild and serene beauty of its marshes and pristine beaches. Here, ancient pagan traditions are celebrated with bonfires under the midnight sun, and history is told on the walls of medieval castles. Prepare to discover a destination that combines rich cultural heritage with overwhelming nature, and where hospitality is served with a slice of dark rye bread and a shot of balsamic liqueur.

Expériences uniques
Celebrate 'Jāņi' (Summer Solstice)
Living the night of 'Līgo' (June 23) is the quintessential Latvian experience. Latvians retire to the countryside, weave wreaths of flowers and oak leaves, light bonfires, sing traditional songs ('Līgo'), drink beer and eat cheese with cumin. Tradition dictates that you have to stay awake all night to look for the mythical fern flower and welcome the morning sun.
Immerse yourself in Riga's Art Nouveau Architecture
Walking along Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela streets in Riga is like entering an open-air architectural museum. The city has more than 800 Art Nouveau buildings, decorated with ornamental facades, mythological figures, floral motifs and flowing lines. It is the most impressive collection of this architectural style in the world.
Relax in a Latvian 'Pirts' (Sauna)
The 'pirts' is a ritual of well-being and purification. More intense than a Finnish sauna, the experience involves the use of different 'slota' (bundles of branches and herbs) to massage the body, the application of natural exfoliants such as honey and, for the bravest, a dip in a lake or rolling in the snow to activate circulation.
Canoeing in Gauja National Park
Renting a canoe or kayak and sailing down the Gauja River is the best way to explore this national park. The peaceful route offers views of red sandstone cliffs (such as Sietiņiezis), dense forests and the imposing Turaida Castle, allowing a total connection with Latvian nature.
Search for Amber on the Baltic Coast
After a storm, the coast of Latvia, especially around Liepāja, becomes a treasure for amber hunters. Walking along the beach in search of 'Baltic gold' is a relaxing activity and a way to connect with an ancient tradition of the region.
Visit the Riga Central Market
Housed in five former German zeppelin hangars, Riga's Central Market is one of the largest and most spectacular in Europe. It is a feast for the senses, where you can buy smoked fish, pickles, local honey, black rye bread and experience the daily life of the city's inhabitants.
Flavors of the Earth and the Baltic Sea
Latvian cuisine is seasonal, hearty and based on local products. The ingredients from its forests, rivers and the Baltic Sea are the protagonists. Pork, potatoes, cabbage and dairy products are the basis of many dishes, with a clear preference for sweet and sour and smoky flavors.

Dark Rye Bread ('Rupjmaize')
'Rupjmaize' is the pillar of Latvian gastronomy and identity. It is a dense, moist and slightly sweet bread, made with sourdough. It is eaten with everything and is so revered that it is even used to make desserts and soups.
From Forest to Table
The Latvian feels a deep connection with his forests. In season, collecting mushrooms (especially 'baravikas' or boletus) and wild berries (blueberries, blackberries, lingonberries) is a national pastime that enriches cuisine.
Plats Iconiques
Pelēkie zirņi ar speķi
Considered the national dish. They are gray peas (a local variety) boiled and then sautéed with onion and pieces of smoked bacon. A rustic and very tasty dish.
Aukstā zupa
A cold beet soup with an intense pink color, very popular in summer. It is made with kefir, cooked beetroot, cucumber, fresh herbs and hard-boiled egg. It's incredibly refreshing.
Sklandrausis
A traditional cake or pasty protected by the EU. It has a rye dough base and is filled with two layers: one of mashed potatoes and the other of mashed carrots, all sprinkled with cinnamon.
Cūkas stilbs
Roasted or cooked pork knuckle. It is a hearty dish, often served with stewed sauerkraut ('štovēti kāposti') and potatoes. A tavern classic.
Griķi
Buckwheat is a very popular side dish, often served with mushrooms and fried onion. It is a simple, healthy dish that is deeply rooted in local cuisine.
Smoked (Kūpinājumi)
Smoking is a very widespread preservation and cooking technique. Smoked fish, such as herring, eel or salmon, are delicious. Riga's 'šprotes' (oil-smoked sprats) are famous.
Boissons typiques
Rīgas Melnais Balzams (Riga Black Balm)
The national drink par excellence. It is a bittersweet herbal liqueur, made with 24 botanical ingredients. It is drunk alone, with ice, mixed with coffee, blackcurrant juice or in cocktails.
Alus (Beer)
Latvia has a thriving beer culture, with big brands such as Aldaris and Cēsu, and a growing craft brewery scene producing high-quality, often unfiltered beers ('dzīvais alus').
Kvass
A traditional fermented drink made from rye bread. It has a low alcohol content and is very refreshing, especially in summer.
Bērzu sula (Birch Juice)
A seasonal drink that is harvested directly from birch trees in spring. It is slightly sweet and is considered a very healthy tonic.
Que voir par thème
Latvia's wealth lies in the harmony between its sophisticated capital and unspoiled nature that occupies most of its territory. Next, we suggest you explore the country through different topics.
Riga: The Pearl of the Baltic
The capital is a must-see in itself. Its medieval old town, impressive collection of Art Nouveau architecture, vibrant Central Market and lively cultural life make it one of the most fascinating cities in Northern Europe.
Palaces, Castles and Hanseatic Legacy
Rundāle Palace is the baroque jewel of the country. For an immersion in medieval times, Turaida Castle in Gauja National Park and the castle of the Livonian Order in Cēsis are essential stops. Riga itself was an important member of the Hanseatic League.
The Coast: Wild Beaches and Spas
Jūrmala, with its kilometers of white sand beach, its spas and its elegant wooden villas, is the summer resort par excellence. For a wilder experience, Cape Kolka, where the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet, and the secluded beaches of the west coast are ideal.
National Parks: Forests and Swamps
Gauja National Park is the largest and oldest, ideal for hiking and canoeing. Ķemeri National Park is famous for its wooden walkways that wind over mystical swamps and peat bogs, offering a unique landscape.
Charming Towns
Kuldīga, in the Courland region, is possibly the most charming village in Latvia, with its Ventas Rumba waterfall, wooden houses and peaceful atmosphere. Cēsis, with its medieval castle and old town, is another gem to discover.
Conseils de voyage
Nature
Nature is very accessible and is part of everyday life. Respect the environment. In summer, especially near forests and water, it is essential to bring mosquito and tick repellent.
Internal Transportation
The bus network is the most efficient and complete way to travel around the country, reaching almost every corner. Trains are also a good option to connect Riga with the main cities.
Language
The official language is Latvian, one of only two surviving Baltic languages. Russian is widely spoken, especially by older generations. English is widely spoken among young people and in Riga's tourism sector.
Tips
Tipping is not mandatory, but it has become common in Riga restaurants. If the service has been good, it is appropriate to leave between 5% and 10% of the total. Outside the capital, it is less common.
This guide is just the beginning of your journey to a land of serene beauty and proud spirit. Latvia is a country that invites you to take a deep breath, listen to its songs and get lost in its forests. We encourage you to explore beyond magnificent Riga to discover the true soul of this Baltic gem. Lai jums labs ceļojums! (Have a good trip!)
