Expériences uniques

Tour an Underground Wine City

Visiting the Mileștii Mici wineries (which holds the Guinness Record for the largest wine collection in the world) or Cricova is a unique experience. These former limestone mines have become authentic underground cities with streets named after grape varieties. They are traveled by car or electric train, culminating in a tasting in its sumptuous rooms.

Explore the Orheiul Vechi Complex

This spectacular archaeological complex is the most emblematic place in Moldova. Located in a rocky valley next to the Răut River, it houses vestiges of different civilizations, but its greatest attraction is the Orthodox monastery excavated in the limestone rock in the 13th century, which is still inhabited by a monk. The views from the cliff are impressive.

Travel back in time to Transnistria

Crossing the Dniester River into the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria is a surreal experience. Its capital, Tiraspol, looks like a time capsule of the USSR, with statues of Lenin, Soviet government buildings and its own currency. It is a fascinating journey into a political entity that officially does not exist.

Celebrate National Wine Day

On the first weekend of October, Chisinau becomes the epicenter of a great national holiday. The country's main wineries set up shop in the central square to offer tastings, while folk music, dances and traditional food stalls create an incredibly festive atmosphere.

Visit the Soroca Fortress

This perfectly preserved medieval fortress stands on the banks of the Dniester River, marking the border with Ukraine. In addition to its historical importance, Soroca is known for being the 'unofficial gypsy capital' of Moldova. On the hill above the fortress you can see the ostentatious and eclectic mansions of the gypsy elite.

Staying in a Rural House ('Pensiune')

To experience the most authentic Moldova, one of the best options is to stay in a 'pensiune' or rural house. It allows you to experience first-hand the legendary local hospitality, enjoy delicious homemade food made with garden products and participate in daily countryside activities.

Flavors of a Fertile Land

Moldovan gastronomy is a faithful reflection of its history and its land: robust, tasty and generous. With strong influences from Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian and Balkan cuisine, it is based on the fresh products of its fertile fields. Corn, vegetables, dairy products and meat are the stars of home cooking full of soul.

Corn, vegetables, dairy products and meat are the stars of home cooking full of soul.

Wine as Food

Wine is not just a drink, it is an integral part of food and culture. Almost all rural families make their own homemade wine ('vin de casă'). A meal without wine is almost unthinkable in Moldova.

Nature's Pantry

Cooking is governed by the seasons. The use of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs and pickles is essential. Each family prepares its preserves ('murături' and 'zacuscă') in summer and autumn to have provisions during the winter.

Plats Iconiques

Mămăligă

The national dish par excellence. It is a corn flour polenta, similar to the Italian one, that serves as a base for many dishes. It is traditionally served with 'brânză' (a brined sheep's cheese), 'smântână' (sour cream) and often with a pork stew ('tocană').

Plăcinte

Some empanadas or cakes, fried or baked, that are found everywhere. They can be salty, filled with cheese, potato or cabbage, or sweet, with pumpkin or cherries. They are the perfect appetizer at any time of the day.

Sarmale

Cabbage or grape leaf rolls filled with a mixture of minced pork, rice and vegetables. They are simmered for hours and are a must-have dish at any family celebration.

Zeama

A light and aromatic chicken soup, considered the remedy for all ills. It is made with homemade chicken, thin noodles ('tăiței de casă') and 'borș acru' (a sour wheat bran liquid) is added, which gives it its characteristic flavour.

Salată de vinete

A salad or creamy pate of roasted and crushed eggplants, mixed with oil, onion and sometimes mayonnaise. It is served cold with bread and is a very popular starter ('zakuska').

Chiftele

Large, juicy meatballs, usually fried. Unlike other versions, they often have potato or breadcrumbs in the mixture, which makes them very tender. They are a very common comfort food.

Boissons typiques

Wine (Vin)

The national drink. Moldova is famous for its wines, both international varieties and indigenous grapes such as Fetească Albă, Fetească Neagră and Rară Neagră.

Divine

It is the local name for brandy or cognac, one of the most appreciated spirits in the country. Wineries like Kvint, in Tiraspol, are famous for their high quality.

Țuică

A powerful homemade brandy, similar to Balkan rachia, which is made mainly from plums, but also from apples or apricots. It is a symbol of welcome in rural areas.

Compot

A very popular non-alcoholic drink, especially in homes. It is prepared by boiling fresh or dried fruits (such as cherries, apricots or apples) with sugar. It is served cold in summer and hot in winter.

Desserts traditionnels

Prune uscate umplute cu nuci

A traditional and elegant dessert. It consists of pitted prunes that are stuffed with a walnut half and often served with sour cream ('smântână') on top.

Cozonac

A spongy, braided sweet bread, similar to panettone, that is prepared for big holidays like Easter and Christmas. It can be filled with nuts, cocoa or Turkish delight.

Easter

A traditional Easter cake. It is a round cake with a sweet dough base filled with a mixture of sweet fresh cheese ('brânză de vaci'), raisins and aromas.

Cușma lui Guguță (The Hat of Guguță)

A very original looking cake reminiscent of a winter hat. It is made with thin rolled crepes filled with cherries and stacked in a pyramid shape, all covered in sour cream and grated chocolate.

Que voir par thème

Moldova's wealth lies in its unique experiences and authentic atmosphere. Next, we suggest you explore the country through different topics that will lead you to discover its many facets.

The Green Capital: Chisinau

Chisinau (Chișinău) is a surprisingly green city, full of parks and wide tree-lined boulevards. Its architecture is a mix of elegant 19th century buildings and monumental constructions from the Soviet era. The Arc de Triomphe, the Orthodox Cathedral and the lively Central Market are must-sees.

Wine Routes and Agrotourism

Moldova is paradise for wine lovers. In addition to the gigantic Cricova and Mileștii Mici, there are dozens of charming boutique wineries, such as Purcari, Castel Mimi or Asconi, offering tastings, high-quality restaurants and accommodation. Many of them can be visited on a day trip from Chisinau.

Monasteries and Spirituality

The country is dotted with Orthodox monasteries in enclaves of great beauty. In addition to the iconic Orheiul Vechi, the Tipova and Saharna monasteries, also partially rock-cut and located next to the Dniester River, offer trails, waterfalls and an atmosphere of deep peace. The Capriana monastery is one of the oldest and most significant.

Soviet Legacy and the Transnistria Anomaly

For those interested in recent history, Moldova is a fascinating destination. The trip to Transnistria, with its own border, currency and unrecognized government, is an immersion in a living relic of the USSR. In Chisinau, buildings such as the Parliament or the abandoned Circus are witnesses of that past.

The Rural and Multicultural North

The north of the country offers a different vision. In Soroca you can visit its medieval fortress and the gypsy hill. In this region you can find villages inhabited by minorities, such as Ukrainians and Russian Old Believers, which adds cultural diversity to the trip.

Conseils de voyage

Schedules

Business hours are similar to those in the rest of Europe, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Supermarkets and shopping centers in Chisinau have longer opening hours. In rural areas, stores may have shorter hours.

Internal Transportation

The most common and cheapest way to move between cities are minibuses, known as 'rutieră' (plural: 'rutiere'). They leave the bus stations ('autogara') when they are full. Trolleybuses are the main means of public transport in Chisinau. The train network is limited and slow.

Language

The official language is Romanian. Russian is also widely spoken and understood, especially by the older generations. English is gaining ground among young people and in Chisinau's tourism sector, but its use is limited in rural areas.

Tips

Tipping is not mandatory, but it has become common practice and is greatly appreciated. In restaurants, if the service has been good, it is customary to leave between 5% and 10% of the total bill.

This guide is just an invitation to discover one of the most authentic and least explored destinations in Europe. Moldova is a country to be savored slowly, like its wines. Every toast, every plate of 'mămăligă', every conversation in a rural house, will bring you closer to the soul of this welcoming land. We encourage you to explore its corners and be surprised by its hidden charm. Drum bun! (Have a good trip!)
