Expériences uniques

Climb the Walls of Kotor

Tackle the 1,355 steps up the side of St. John's Mountain, above the old town of Kotor. The effort is rewarded with absolutely unforgettable views of the city and the entire Bay of Kotor. It is a magical experience, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Rafting in the Tara Canyon

Sailing the turquoise waters of the Tara River, through the deepest canyon in Europe, is one of the greatest adventures in the Balkans. Rafting offers a unique perspective of the spectacular cliffs and unspoiled nature of Durmitor National Park.

Sailing on Lake Skadar

Take a traditional wooden boat to explore the vast and serene Lake Skadar, a water-lily covered paradise. It is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Europe, where you can spot frowning pelicans and cormorants. The experience is completed with a swim in its waters and a visit to small fishing villages.

Feel the Spirituality of Ostrog Monastery

Visiting this impressive Serbian Orthodox monastery, built into a vertical rock wall, is an experience that amazes both pilgrims and tourists. The atmosphere of faith and the incredible feat of its construction in such an inaccessible place make it a unique place in the world.

Driving along the Kotor Serpentine

For lovers of panoramic roads, the old road connecting Kotor to Cetinje is an unforgettable challenge. Its 25 hairpin curves offer a new and more spectacular view of the Bay of Kotor at every turn. Not suitable for nervous drivers.

Visit 'Our Lady of the Rocks'

Take a small boat from Perast to visit the artificial island of 'Gospa od Škrpjela' (Our Lady of the Rocks). Legend has it that the island was created by local sailors over centuries, throwing rocks at the site. The small baroque church and its museum are charming.

Flavors of the Adriatic Sea and the Black Mountain

Montenegrin cuisine is clearly divided into two: that of the coast, with Mediterranean influence, with fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and vegetables; and that of the mountainous interior, much more robust, based on smoked meats, dairy products, stews and dishes based on corn and potatoes.

Local and Organic Products

The kitchen prides itself on using fresh ingredients, often organic by default. Free-range lamb, homemade cheeses and garden vegetables form the basis of most dishes.

Hospitality at the Table

Hospitality is sacred. It is customary to welcome guests with 'priganice' (fritters) and a shot of 'rakija'. A meal is always abundant and a reflection of the host's pride.

Plats Iconiques

Njeguški pršut

The famous cured and smoked ham from the village of Njeguši. Its unique flavor is due to the mountain air and the drying process. It is served thinly sliced, often with local cheese ('Njeguški sir').

Jagnjetina ispod sača

Lamb cooked 'under the sač', a large metal lid covered in embers. This slow cooking method makes the meat incredibly tender and juicy, often cooked alongside potatoes.

Kačamak

A very filling mountain dish, similar to polenta. It is made with corn and potato flour, and served with cream cheese ('kajmak') or sour yogurt. It will give you energy for the whole day.

Buzara

A seafood stew (usually mussels or prawns) cooked in a sauce of white wine, garlic, parsley and tomato. It is a coastal classic.

Crni rižot

Black risotto, a popular dish throughout the Dalmatian coast. Its color and intense sea flavor come from squid ink.

Riblji paprikaš / Riblja čorba

A spicy fish soup or stew, typical of the Lake Skadar area. It is made with freshwater fish (generally carp) and paprika ('paprika').

Boissons typiques

Rakija

The brandy of the Balkans. The grape variety ('Lozova rakija' or 'Loza') is the most popular, followed by the plum variety ('Šljivovica'). It is drunk as an aperitif to welcome.

Wine (Vranac and Krstač)

Montenegro has a long winemaking tradition. 'Vranac' is the flagship red wine, robust and powerful. 'Krstač' is the main variety of white wine, fresh and indigenous.

Nikšicko Pivo

The national beer par excellence, a light and refreshing lager that is found everywhere. It is the perfect companion for an informal meal.

Medovina

Mead, a traditional alcoholic drink made from the fermentation of honey. It is sweet and aromatic.

Que voir par thème

The richness of Montenegro lies in its incredible ability to offer radically different landscapes and experiences in a very small space. Next, we suggest you explore the country through different topics.

The Bay of Kotor: The Adriatic Fjord

A World Heritage Site, this bay is a spectacle in itself. The route should include the walled city of Kotor, the charming baroque town of Perast with its islands, and the fishing villages that dot its shores.

The Mountain Heart: National Parks

Durmitor National Park is the epicenter of adventure tourism, with the Tara Canyon, Black Lake and hiking peaks. Biogradska Gora is home to one of the last virgin forests in Europe. And Lovćen National Park is the spiritual heart of Montenegro.

The Riviera: Beaches, Glamor and Party

The Budva coast is the tourist center of the country. The city of Budva offers a beautiful old town and a lively nightlife. Nearby are the famous island of Sveti Stefan, the long Bečići beach and quieter coves such as Jaz or Mogren.

The Royal and Spiritual Legacy

A trip inland leads to Cetinje, the former royal capital, filled with embassies and historic palaces. The Ostrog Monastery is the country's main pilgrimage site, while the Njegoš Mausoleum atop Mount Lovćen offers panoramic views and a deep sense of national identity.

The Great Lake and the Old South

Lake Skadar National Park is a paradise for bird watching and relaxation. In the south, the town of Ulcinj, with its Albanian majority and its pirate past, and the long sandy beach of Velika Plaža, offer a completely different atmosphere.

Conseils de voyage

Currency

Montenegro uses the Euro (€) as its currency, despite not being a member of the European Union. This makes travel easier for many visitors.

Internal Transportation

Renting a car is the best option to explore the country freely, but be prepared for narrow and winding mountain roads. The bus network is an economical and efficient alternative that connects all major cities.

Language

The official language is Montenegrin. Serbian, Bosnian, Albanian and Croatian are also in official use. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken, especially by young people.

Tips

Tipping is not mandatory but is common practice. In restaurants, it is common to round up the bill or leave 10% if you are satisfied with the service. In taxis, the fare can be rounded.

This guide is just an invitation to discover the incredible diversity of the 'Wild Pearl of the Adriatic'. Montenegro is a country that will captivate you with its landscapes, delight you with its food and welcome you with its warmth. We encourage you to explore both its famous coasts and its secret mountains. Srećan put! (Have a good trip!)
