Expériences uniques

Hiking in the High Tatras

Exploring the High Tatras National Park is a world-class alpine experience. Well-marked hiking trails lead to crystal-clear glacial lakes such as Štrbské Pleso or Popradské Pleso, waterfalls and challenging peaks. It is paradise for mountain lovers.

Explore Spis Castle

Dominating the landscape from a hill, the imposing ruins of Spiš Castle are an unforgettable sight. Declared a World Heritage Site, exploring its walls, towers and courtyards is a journey back to the Middle Ages and offers spectacular panoramic views of the region.

Getting lost in the Old Town of Bratislava

Strolling through the cobblestone streets of Bratislava's old town is a pleasure. Discover its charming squares, its peculiar statues (such as that of Čumil, the man coming out of a sewer), go up to the castle to enjoy the views of the Danube and enjoy the lively atmosphere of its cafes and bars.

Discover the Wooden Churches

Spread across the north and east of the country, the wooden churches of the Carpathians are an architectural gem. Built without a single nail, these Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, with their elaborate interiors, are a unique testimony of faith and popular craftsmanship.

Walk through the Gorges of Slovak Paradise

The Slovak Paradise National Park (Slovenský raj) offers a unique adventure. Its hiking routes traverse narrow canyons and gorges, climbing a system of wooden stairs, bridges and platforms next to waterfalls. It is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo.

Eat in a traditional 'Koliba'

A 'koliba' is a traditional shepherd's hut, now often converted into a restaurant. It is the perfect place to try authentic Slovak cuisine, such as goulash or 'bryndzové halušky', in a rustic atmosphere, with folk music and a wood-burning fireplace.

Strong Mountain Flavors

Slovak cuisine is a reflection of its mountainous geography and agricultural past: it is hearty, tasty and comforting. Based on local ingredients such as potatoes, cabbage, sheep's cheese and smoked meats, it is a cuisine designed to give you energy, ideal for after a day of hiking. It is a cuisine to share, always served with genuine hospitality.

Kapusta: The Passion for Cabbage

Cabbage, especially fermented cabbage (sauerkraut or 'kyslá kapusta'), is a mainstay of the kitchen. Sauerkraut soup ('kapustnica') is the essential dish for Christmas dinner.

Vyprážaný syr

Que voir par thème

The wealth of Slovakia lies in its incredible concentration of castles, mountains and historic towns in an easy-to-navigate territory. Next, we suggest you explore the country through different topics.

Fairytale Castles Route

Slovakia is the country of castles. In addition to Spiš, don't miss the romantic Bojnice Castle, Orava Castle perched on a rock, or the ruins of Devín Castle at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.

Natural Paradises and Mountains

The High Tatras are the jewel in the crown, but the Low Tatras and Little Carpathians also offer excellent hiking opportunities. The Slovak Paradise National Park is unique for its trails through canyons and waterfalls.

Historic Towns and Cities (UNESCO)

In addition to the wooden churches, several cities are World Heritage Sites. Banská Štiavnica is a medieval mining town of exceptional beauty. Bardejov has one of the most intact medieval squares in the region. And Levoča is famous for its Gothic wooden altar, the highest in the world.

An Underground World

Slovakia has a vast cave system open to the public. The most notable are the Dobšinská Ice Cave, the Demänovská Freedom Cave, and the Domica Cave with its underground navigation along the Styx River.

The Eastern Route

The east of the country offers a different experience. Košice, the second city, has a stunning Gothic cathedral and a vibrant atmosphere. Prešov and the Carpathian wood region offer a glimpse into Rusian culture.

Conseils de voyage

Highway Vignette

To use Slovak highways, it is mandatory to purchase an electronic vignette ('elektronická diaľničná známka'). It can be purchased online or at gas stations and post offices.

Internal Transportation

The train network is a good way to move between major cities. Buses are more efficient for reaching smaller towns and rural areas. Public transportation in cities is cheap and reliable.

Language

The official language is Slovak. Czech is mutually intelligible. In Bratislava and other tourist areas, English is spoken by young people and in the service sector, but in rural areas it can be more difficult to communicate.

Tips

Tipping is common practice. In restaurants, it is common to leave around 10% of the total bill if the service has been satisfactory. You can also round up the bill in bars and taxis.

This guide is just an introduction to the surprising diversity of Slovakia. It is a country that rewards those who venture beyond the beaten path with unforgettable landscapes, fascinating history and a human warmth that lingers in memory. We encourage you to explore its peaks and valleys, to discover its hidden treasures. Šťastnú cestu! (Have a good trip!)
