Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Jerez of la Frontera y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The origins of Jerez de la Frontera date back to ancient times, with human presence since the Chalcolithic more than 5,000 years ago. It was an important settlement in the Tartessian civilization around the 3rd millennium BC. Later, the Phoenicians founded the colony called Xera about 3,000 years ago, becoming a strategic commercial point. Under Roman rule, the city was known as Seritium, notable for its agriculture and livestock. The Roman influence left a significant cultural and economic legacy, which lasted even after the arrival of the Visigoths.
During the Middle Ages, Jerez was fortified under Muslim rule, especially in the Almoravid and Almohad periods (11th and 12th centuries), building walls and the Alcázar that are still preserved. In 1264, it was conquered by Alfonso X the Wise, who repopulated the city with Castilian nobles. The city was a border between Christians and Muslims until the Battle of Salado in 1340, when the border moved. In 1380, King John I granted him the title of 'de la Frontera'. During the Modern Age, Jerez grew as an agricultural and commercial center, consolidating its fame for wine production and horse breeding.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, Jerez has experienced significant urban and cultural development, while maintaining its wine and equestrian tradition. It is home to international events such as the Flamenco Festival and the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix. The city has modernized its tourist and cultural infrastructure, promoting its historical heritage and its Andalusian identity in the contemporary world, being a benchmark in cultural tourism and the wine industry.
