Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Tarragona y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Tarragona, originally called Tarraco, was founded in 218 BC. during the Second Punic War by the brothers Scipio, Gnaeus and Publius Cornelius, as a Roman military camp that was transformed into a city. It was the capital of the Roman province Hispania Citerior and an important administrative and military center. The city had a strategic port and was protected by walls initially built of wood and later of stone. Tarraco was a key point in the consolidation of Roman rule in the Iberian Peninsula and became the capital of the Empire for three years under Emperor Augustus.
During the Middle Ages, Tarragona maintained its importance as a port city and religious center, with the construction of the cathedral and the consolidation of its urban structure. In the modern era, the city experienced urban and economic growth, adapting to the political and social changes in Catalonia and Spain. It was the scene of important events such as the War of the Spanish Succession and industrialization in the 19th century, which promoted its port and commercial development.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, Tarragona has continued its urban and tourist development, preserving its historical heritage while modernizing infrastructure. The declaration of its archaeological complex as World Heritage by UNESCO has boosted cultural tourism. Currently, Tarragona is a benchmark in the region of Catalonia for its combination of history, beaches and cultural activities, and plays an important role in the local and regional economy thanks to its port and services sector.
