Explora el fascinante pasado de Zermatt y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
For centuries, Zermatt was a remote German-speaking farming community. Its name derives from 'zur Matte', meaning 'on the meadow', referring to the alpine pastures surrounding the original settlement.
Tourism began in the mid-19th century, culminating with the tragic but historic first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Edward Whymper. This event put Zermatt on the world mountaineering map and led to the construction of the Gornergrat railway in 1898.
In 2026, Zermatt will consolidate itself as a benchmark for sustainable tourism and high mountain technology, highlighting the consolidation of the 'Matterhorn Alpine Crossing', the highest cable car connection in the Alps that links Switzerland with Italy throughout the year.
