Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Liverpool y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Founded by a royal charter from King John in 1207, Liverpool was for centuries a small, insignificant fishing port, in the shadow of nearby powerful Chester.
The city exploded in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming a port of global importance and one of the richest cities in the British Empire. Its growth was based on trade, including the transatlantic slave trade (an obscure and recognized part of its history), and later on the mass emigration of Irish and Europeans to America. This wealth translated into grandiose Victorian architecture.
After the post-war industrial decline, Liverpool found its new identity in the 1960s. The 'Merseybeat' phenomenon, led by The Beatles, made it the capital of world pop culture. Despite economic difficulties in the 1980s, the city has undergone a spectacular renaissance since the 2000s, culminating in its designation as European Capital of Culture in 2008, which spurred massive urban regeneration.
