The city's history began with the Roman fort of "Mancunium", established around 79 AD. in the Castlefield area. For centuries, it remained a small market town.
The Industrial Revolution transformed Manchester into a global power. As the center of the world cotton trade, it earned the nickname "Cotton Capital." This boom period saw immense wealth and innovation, but also social unrest and political radicalism, influencing thinkers such as Friedrich Engels.
After post-industrial decline, an IRA bombing in 1996 became the catalyst for a massive regeneration project. The city reinvented itself, boosted by the legendary 'Madchester' music scene, the 2002 Commonwealth Games and its growth as a major UK hub for media, technology and culture, often referred to as the 'Northern Capital'.
