The Banff area was inhabited for millennia by Indigenous peoples, especially the Stoney Nakoda, for whom the mountains and hot springs held deep spiritual and medicinal significance.
In 1883, transcontinental railway workers discovered the caves and hot springs of Sulphur Mountain. Three years later, in 1885, the Canadian government created the Banff Hot Springs Reserve, the seed of Canada's first national park (1887) and one of the world's first national parks.
Throughout the 20th century, Banff grew into Canada's premier mountain tourist destination. The town developed around historic hotels such as the Fairmont Banff Springs, and the area became a world reference for skiing and hiking. Today, Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, welcomes over four million visitors a year while protecting one of the most iconic mountain ecosystems on the planet.
