Founded in 1519 by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez, San Cristóbal de La Habana quickly became the most important port in the New World. Its strategic location at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico made it a meeting point for Spanish fleets loaded with treasure, which made it a constant target for pirates and privateers, leading to the construction of a formidable system of fortresses.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city flourished thanks to the sugar and tobacco industry, building opulent baroque and neoclassical palaces. The 20th century brought a strong American influence, transforming Havana into a playground for the world's elite, with mafia casinos, luxury hotels and legendary nightlife.
The Cuban Revolution of 1959, led by Fidel Castro, drastically changed the course of the city. Casinos closed and many buildings were nationalized. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city went through the 'Special Period', a harsh economic crisis. Today, Havana lives a complex reality, balancing its socialist legacy with a growing private economy ('self-employment') and a resurgence of tourism that seeks its unique authenticity.
