Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Antigua Guatemala y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the region where Antigua Guatemala is located was inhabited by Mayan peoples who were part of the classic Mayan civilization. These towns had an advanced social and cultural organization, with ceremonial and agricultural centers. The arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century marked the beginning of colonization and founding of cities in the territory, displacing the original indigenous populations.
The city was officially founded in 1543 as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, after relocation from the Almolonga Valley due to flooding. During the colonial era, Antigua became the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala and an important political, religious and cultural center of Central America. Its urban design was inspired by the Italian Renaissance, with streets in the shape of a chessboard. The city once had more than 80,000 inhabitants and numerous churches, convents and public buildings. However, it suffered multiple earthquakes, with the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773 causing its almost total destruction and the transfer of the capital to Guatemala City.
In the 20th century, especially since the 1960s, Antigua Guatemala began a process of reconstruction and restoration, respecting its original layout and architecture. In 1979 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which promoted its conservation and tourism development. Currently, Antigua is an internationally recognized cultural and tourist center, with a population of approximately 45,000 inhabitants. The city combines its historical legacy with a modern offer of services, education and culture, maintaining its importance in the Guatemalan and global context.
