During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city grew exponentially as a major commercial port and the main entry point for millions of immigrants to the United States. After World War II, New York established itself as an undisputed world capital in finance, diplomacy (with the headquarters of the UN) and culture. Despite crises such as that of the 1970s and the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the city has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for resilience and reinvention, remaining one of the most influential and dynamic cities on the planet.
