Originally inhabited by the Tehuelche people, the area was a transit point for nomadic routes. The name comes from a thorny bush typical of the region, the calafate, whose fruits are a symbol of Patagonia.
Officially founded in 1927 as a resupply post for the wool caravans that came down from the mountain ranches. For decades it was a small rural town dedicated to sheep farming.
With the creation of the National Park and the improvement of airport infrastructure in the 21st century, El Calafate was transformed into a world-class tourist center, modernizing its hotel and gastronomic offer without losing its mountain village essence.
