Originally inhabited by the indigenous Guaraní people, the region was first explored by the Spanish Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1542, who documented the falls as 'Saltos de Santa María'.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the city began to be formally organized. In 1939 the Iguazú National Park was created, laying the foundations for the ecological tourism that defines the identity of the city today.
