August to November (especially during waning moon)

One of the most impressive nature spectacles on the planet. In events that last 3 to 7 consecutive days, between 100,000 and 300,000 olive ridley turtles emerge from the Pacific Ocean onto Ostional beach in a massive synchronized phenomenon to excavate their nests and lay millions of eggs.

December to April

Pristine blue skies, offshore sea breezes combing perfect waves at Playa Guiones and the daily ritual of the entire community gathering on the sand at 5:30 p.m. to applaud the sunset with bonfires and acoustic music.

January / February

Traditional village festivals in the Nosara ring with bull riding in Guanacaste style (without killing the animal), morning reveries with charanga music ('cimarrona'), popular dances and typical food stalls (tamales, corn chorreadas and roast beef).

Just 15 minutes north, guided night or dawn tour to see thousands of olive ridley sea turtles nesting on the black sand of the Ostional Refuge (especially between July and December during the waning moon).

One of the most beautiful and paradisiacal beaches in Costa Rica: a double bay of white sand and transparent turquoise waters joined by a rock peninsula, ideal for snorkeling.

Kayak Tours through the Mangroves of Río Montaña

Guided expedition silently paddling through the red and black mangrove tunnels observing gray herons, kingfishers, fiddler crabs and monkeys in the treetops.

Strict Rules on the Ostional Turtle Tour

It is mandatory to enter Ostional beach accompanied by a local accredited guide from the Ostional Guides Association (AGLO), wearing dark clothing and without using photographic flash or white lights.

'Reef-Safe' Sunscreen

Only use biodegradable mineral sunscreens based on zinc oxide (without oxybenzone or octinoxate) to avoid damaging fragile corals and marine fauna when swimming.

Insect and Dust Repellent

Bring ecological mosquito repellent for walks along jungle trails at sunset and a scarf/buff to protect yourself from dust on dry roads if you travel by quad.

Rip Currents in Surfing

Playa Guiones has a soft sandy bottom but rip currents can form; If you are caught in a current, stay calm, do not swim against it and swim parallel to the shore until you leave the channel.

Be careful with belongings on the beach

Never leave cameras, cell phones, backpacks or purses unattended in the sand while surfing or swimming, nor leave valuables visible on quads or parked cars.
