Connexions, gares et escapades ferroviaires depuis Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, is a vibrant and sophisticated metropolis defined by water. Known as 'The Gate to the World' for its gigantic harbour, the city is crisscrossed by a network of canals and dominated by Lake Alster at its heart. From the historic Speicherstadt (warehouse city) and modern HafenCity with its iconic Elbphilharmonie, to the legendary nightlife of the Reeperbahn and alternative neighborhoods, Hamburg combines its Hanseatic pride with cosmopolitan energy and undeniable maritime charm.
Your public transport ticket (HVV) includes the use of the port ferries. Line 62 from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder is the ultimate 'secret' tourist route: you'll see the skyline, harbor cranes and Elbe beaches for the price of a bus ticket.
Hamburg is a very cycling city. Use the public bike rental system 'Stadtrad'. The first 30 minutes of each trip are free.
The 'Queen of Hansa'. Its medieval old town, surrounded by water, is a World Heritage Site and famous for its Gothic brick architecture, Holstentor Gate and marzipan.
Another proud Hanseatic City, famous for the tale of the 'Bremen Musicians', its market square (UNESCO) and the charming medieval quarter of Schnoor.
A beautiful medieval town that prospered from the salt trade and survived the war undamaged. Its historic center is full of brick houses and a charming atmosphere.
The largest fruit growing region in Central Europe, just outside Hamburg. Especially beautiful during the flowering of the cherry and apple trees in spring.

Don't just see it from above. Go down the historic elevators and cross the Alter Elbtunnel on foot. The views of the skyline from the other side (Steinwerder) are spectacular and free.
Take an S-Bahn to Blankenese and get lost in the 'stairs district' (Treppenviertel). A labyrinth of alleys and stairs that go down the hill to the river, with dream houses and a Mediterranean atmosphere.
Hamburgers may seem distant at first, it's part of Hanseatic culture. It is not coldness, but a form of respect and formality.
It is customary to leave a tip of between 5% and 10% in restaurants, or round up the bill, if the service has been good. Simply tell the total amount you want to pay to the waiter.
The tap water is of excellent quality and can be drunk without any problem.
The area is safe, but at night it attracts all kinds of people. Keep an eye on your belongings, don't get carried away by scammers and avoid side streets if you're alone. Herbertstraße is only for men over 18 years old.
As in any big city, beware of pickpockets in busy places such as the central station, Fischmarkt or public transport.
