I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Abu Dhabi y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Abu Dhabi's origins date back to prehistory, with archaeological evidence on Marouh Island dating back approximately 7,000 years, during the Stone Age. Later, in the Bronze Age, the region was inhabited by civilizations such as Umm Al Nar and Wadi Suq, which maintained trade with distant areas such as Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. In late antiquity, Christianity had a presence on Sir Bani Yas Island with a monastery from the 4th to 6th century AD, coexisting with Muslim communities until the 8th century.
During the Middle Ages, Abu Dhabi was part of the kingdom of Hormuz, which controlled trade in the Persian Gulf. In the 18th century, the Bani Yas tribe settled on the island, founding the settlement that would give rise to the current city. The Al Nahyan family, descendants of this tribe, began to govern the region. In the following centuries, the city grew slowly, based on fishing, pearl collecting and maritime trade, until the arrival of the British who established a protectorate in the 19th century.
The discovery of oil in 1958 marked a turning point for Abu Dhabi, spurring rapid urban and economic development. Following independence and the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Abu Dhabi established itself as a federal capital and center of power. In recent decades, the city has invested in modern infrastructure, education, culture and tourism, with iconic projects such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island. Currently, Abu Dhabi is a key player in regional politics and economy, with a focus on economic diversification and sustainability.
