Explore the fascinating past of Saint-Malo and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Originally founded in the 1st century by the Romans in nearby Aleth, the settlement moved in the 12th century to the rocky island of Saint-Malo to fortify itself and defend against attacks, giving rise to the walled city.

Development Period

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Saint-Malo experienced its golden age as a nest of privateers authorized by the king to plunder enemy ships, amassing enormous wealth and building the luxurious residences known as 'malouinières'.

Modern Period

Almost completely devastated (80%) during World War II in the Battle of Saint-Malo, the walled city was meticulously rebuilt stone by stone between 1948 and 1960, faithfully respecting its traditional granite architecture.
