Founded as the Moorish settlement of 'Mayrit' in the 9th century, Madrid was a strategic fortress on the central plateau. Its history changed forever in 1561, when King Philip II made it the permanent capital of the vast Spanish Empire.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, under the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties, Madrid transformed into a monumental capital. The Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, and grand avenues were built, consolidating its status as the political and cultural heart of Spain.
