Founded in the 3rd century BC. by the Celtic tribe of the Parisii, it was conquered by the Romans and baptized as Lutetia. In 508 AD, the Frankish king Clovis made it his capital, laying the foundations of future France.
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Paris flourished as a cultural and religious center. However, its most radical transformation came in the 19th century under Baron Haussmann, who demolished medieval neighborhoods to create the grand boulevards, squares and parks that define the city today.
