Australia isn’t “done” in two weeks

In 14 days the sane plan is East Coast: Sydney (4–5), Melbourne + Great Ocean Road (4–5) and Cairns/Port Douglas (4) with flights. Don’t stack Uluru + Tasmania + Perth + Broome in one arc — you’ll bleed days in airports.

Shoulder: good Sydney/Melbourne weather and a kinder reef season.

Beaches and festivals; humid heat in Queensland and high prices.

Mild winter up north; Melbourne chilly. Whales on some coasts.

Days 1–5

Sydney & Blue Mountains

Harbour (Opera, Circular Quay), Bondi–Coogee walk, one neighbourhood (Surry Hills/Newtown) and a Blue Mountains day or Manly ferry.

  • Jet lag: soft day 1. Book Opera tour or BridgeClimb only if you truly care.
Days 6–10

Melbourne & Ocean Road

Sydney–Melbourne flight. Cafés, laneways, NGV or street art, and 1–2 days Great Ocean Road (12 Apostles) by car or tour.

  • One-day express Ocean Road is exhausting — overnight in Lorne/Apollo Bay if you can.
Days 11–14

Cairns / Great Barrier Reef

Flight to Cairns or Port Douglas. Reef day (snorkel/dive boat), Daintree or Kuranda, and weather buffer.

  • The reef depends on weather — leave 2 windows, not one rigid day.

Domestic flights

Sydney–Melbourne–Cairns is the skeleton. Book early; driving the whole East Coast in 14 days doesn’t fit.

Where to stay

Sydney: CBD/Darling Harbour or Bondi · Melbourne: CBD/Fitzroy · Reef: Cairns or Port Douglas.

Sun, stingers, biosecurity

High SPF. In Queensland check stinger season. Don’t carry fresh food between states/airports.

Food

Melbourne brunch · Sydney seafood · coastal fish & chips. Tipping isn’t US-style mandatory.

Tips

One green day per city

Blue Mountains or Manly ferry in Sydney; Ocean Road or peninsula day from Melbourne.

Uluru “on the way”

It’s another flight and climate. Better as a separate Red Centre trip.

City transit cards by town. In Cairns, car or tours matter more.

Only Opera photo and done

Sydney makes sense walking coasts and neighbourhoods — not only the harbour postcard.
