Two biomes, not the whole map

In 8 days: interior (3–4) in Arenal or Monteverde + Pacific (3–4) in Manuel Antonio or Guanacaste. Don’t stack Tortuguero + Caribbean + Osa + Arenal + Guanacaste — roads eat the trip.

Peak: more Pacific sun and higher prices. Book lodges early.

Day 1

Arrive San José → interior

Pick up a car or shuttle toward La Fortuna (Arenal) or Monteverde. Don’t force a full SJO city tour — the green leads.

  • Drive daylight for the first hours — fog and mountain curves.
Days 2–4

Arenal or Monteverde

Hanging bridges, lava trails, waterfalls or canopy. One ecosystem well > two express parks the same day.

  • Arenal = volcano + hot springs. Monteverde = cloud forest. Pick one as the anchor.
Days 5–7

Pacific (Manuel Antonio or Guanacaste)

Beach + park (monkeys, trails) or more open Guanacaste beaches. One “sea only” day wins.

  • Manuel Antonio: enter early (caps). Guanacaste: more sun, more driving between beaches.
Day 8

Buffer & departure

Return to SJO with margin (2.5–4 h depending on base). Return the car with fuel and exterior photos.

  • Early flights: sleep near the airport the last night if you leave at dawn.

Transfers

2WD is fine on the classic route; shared shuttles save stress. Avoid three distant bases.

Weather & safety

Light layers + rain jacket. Don’t leave valuables visible on beach/car. Travel insurance.
