Three landscapes, real distances

In 10 days: Sossusvlei (2–3) + Swakopmund (2) + Etosha (3–4) self-drive or tour. Coast alt: Skeleton Coast lite instead of full Etosha. Don’t stack Fish River + Caprivi + Etosha + Sossusvlei + Lüderitz.

Day 1

Windhoek → south

Pick up 4x4, supplies, and drive toward Sesriem/Sossusvlei. Don’t force a long WDH city tour.

  • Drive daylight — distances deceive. Refuel whenever you can.
Days 2–3

Sossusvlei / Sesriem

Sunrise on dunes (Big Daddy / Dune 45), Deadvlei, Sesriem Canyon. One “dunes only” day wins.

  • Enter the park early — heat and light. Carry water and shoes for sand.
Days 4–5

Swakopmund / coast

Cold Atlantic, German-tinged town, Walvis Bay lagoon or Sandwich Harbour lite. Skeleton Coast only if it doesn’t eat Etosha.

  • Coastal fog: layers. One sea day changes the desert rhythm.
Days 6–9

Etosha (or Skeleton Coast lite)

Self-drive between waterholes; nights in park camp or lodge. Northern coast alt: don’t combine with full Etosha.

  • Two–three nights minimum in Etosha. Waterhole sunset is the souvenir.
Day 10

Return to Windhoek

Drive to WDH with margin to return the 4x4 and fly. Don’t plan a long detour on the last day.

  • Photos of the vehicle on return. Fuel and tyres: check before the final leg.

Practical

Self-drive

4x4 recommended for deep Sossusvlei sand. Gravel: slow down. Offline GPS + paper map.

Where to stay

Sesriem/Sossus · Swakopmund · Etosha camps (Okaukuejo/Namutoni) or gate lodges.

Water & sun

Litres of water in the car. UV + wind. Insurance with remote roadside assistance.

Food

Braai · game meat with judgment · coastal seafood. Supermarket in WDH/Swakop before long legs.

Tips

Sunrise on the dunes

6–8 am light is the trip. Midday Deadvlei is an oven.

Fish River + Etosha in 10 days

The canyon is far. Choose southern desert OR northern wildlife — not both express.

Sunset waterholes

Sit and wait — Etosha rewards patience more than mileage.

Night gravel driving

Animals and potholes — plan daytime arrivals.
