Scotland in 7 days
Scotland in 7 days: Edinburgh, the Highlands and a taste of islands or lochs without a driving marathon. A realistic route.
Fewer kilometres, more good mist
In 7 days: Edinburgh (2–3), the Glencoe / Fort William axis (2) and Skye or coast (2). Don’t stack Skye + Orkney + whisky coast + Glasgow in one week.

When
May–Jun / Sep
Long light, fewer midges than peak summer.
Jul–Aug
Edinburgh Festival = expensive. Busy Highlands. Book now.
Winter
Short days; roads and ferries can close. Magic if you accept the weather.
Budget / day
£80–160
Hotel
£30–55
Food
£25–50
Car/train
£140–250
Total
7 days
Days 1–3Edinburgh
Royal Mile, timed castle, Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill, and one museum (National or Holyrood).
- In August the Festival changes everything — book hotel and castle now.
Days 4–5Glencoe & Fort William
Car or train into the Highlands: Glencoe, optional Glenfinnan, Fort William base.
- The West Highland Line is a spectacular alternative to driving.
Days 6–7Skye or west coast
Bridge to Skye (Fairy Pools / Old Man of Storr calmly) or nearer peninsulas if you hate driving.
- Skye in season: car parks full by 10am. Start early or accept fewer selfies.
Practical
Car vs train
A car gives Highlands freedom. Train + local tours if you don’t want left-side driving.
Where to stay
Edinburgh Old/New Town · Fort William or Ballachulish · Portree on Skye (pricey).
Weather & midges
Layers + rain jacket. Repellent in summer. Don’t trust “sun tomorrow”.
Food
Fresh seafood · haggis once · whisky tasting with transport planned.
Tips
2-night blocks
Fewer hotel changes and less dusk driving.
Edinburgh → Skye round trip in one day
Too many driving hours. Sleep nearby or skip it.
Single-track roads
Use passing places. Don’t stop in the middle “for the photo”.
Only castle + whisky shop
Scotland is landscape and pace — leave gaps without a checklist.
