In 10 days: Cultural Triangle (3), Kandy + train to Ella (2–3) and south coast (3–4). Don’t stack Jaffna + East + West + Horton Plains + daily safaris.

Best window for the classic west–south–hills route.

Days 1–3

Cultural Triangle

Dawn Sigiriya, Dambulla or Polonnaruwa, and a night near Habarana/Sigiriya.

  • Climb Sigiriya early — heat and queues kill the rock at noon.
Days 4–6

Kandy & train to Ella

Temple of the Tooth (respectfully), optional botanical garden, scenic train to Ella and short hikes.

  • Book train seats online — observation car sells out.
Days 7–10

South coast

Mirissa/Weligama (beach, whales in season), Galle Fort, and buffer time back toward CMB airport.

  • Yala safari: one morning is enough — don’t stack two parks on a short trip.

Driver or train

Private driver is the norm. Combine with the Kandy–Ella train (the trip highlight).

Where to stay

Sigiriya/Habarana · Kandy · Ella · Mirissa or Unawatuna · last night near CMB if early flight.

Temples & dress

Shoulders and knees covered. Shoes off. Ask before ritual photos.
