City: Segovia

Segovia, a World Heritage city, is a spectacular setting where history has left three masterpieces: its imposing Roman Aqueduct, its Gothic Cathedral known as 'the Lady of Cathedrals', and its fairy-tale Alcázar. Located on a rocky hill, this Castilian jewel offers a journey through time through its stone streets, its Romanesque churches and a strong gastronomy led by roast suckling pig.

The panoramic views from the valleys surrounding the city are impressive. The Alcázar on its rocky promontory is an iconic image. The proximity of the Sierra de Guadarrama adds a spectacular natural component.
The natural beauty is in the surroundings, not so much within the walled city.

Safety

83

One of the safest cities you can visit. Crime is an anecdotal problem.

You can walk around any corner in complete safety at any time.Very low crime rates.

Transport

60

Unnecessary and practically useless in the historic center. It is only relevant to connect with the high-speed train station.

A good bus service connects the AVE station (Segovia-Guiomar) with the Aqueduct.
The historic center should be explored exclusively on foot. There is no metro or tram.

Tips for Adventure

The Best Photo of the Alcázar

Don't settle for the view from the square. Go down the Paseo del Salón, cross the Eresma River and go up to the Pradera de San Marcos. The view from there, with the meadow and the river in the foreground, is postcard-perfect.

Look for Stonemason Marks

Look at the ashlars of the Aqueduct. On many of them you will see engraved marks. They are the signatures of the stonemasons who carved them 2000 years ago.

Spanish Rhythm

Life is calm. Enjoy a leisurely walk. Small shops usually close at midday.

Drinking water

The tap water is of excellent quality, coming from the mountains.

Be careful where you step

The biggest danger in Segovia is spraining an ankle. The streets are cobblestone and irregular. Wear flat shoes with good support.
