Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a fascinating mix of ancient and modern. Originally built on seven hills, the city offers a unique contrast between the Roman ruins that crown its peaks, the bustling souks of the historic center and the cosmopolitan neighborhoods of the west, all under the characteristic white tone of its limestone.

Development
After centuries of relative dormancy, Amman re-emerged at the end of the 19th century with the arrival of Circassians and the construction of the Hejaz railway. In 1921, it became the capital of the Emirate of Transjordan under King Abdullah I.
Modern era
In recent decades, Amman has experienced explosive growth, becoming a regional center for business, education and a haven of stability in the Middle East, notable for its urban modernization and cultural openness.
