History
Origins
Bordeaux was founded in the 3rd century BC. by the Viviscan bituriges with the name of Burdigala, quickly becoming a prosperous Gallo-Roman commercial port at the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. During the Roman Empire it developed a pioneering wine industry, advanced urban infrastructure and commercial connections with the entire Mediterranean. Its strategic position as the Atlantic gateway to the European continent established the foundations of its ancient commercial and wine-growing vocation.
Development
The Middle Ages and English rule (1152-1453) deeply marked the Bordeaux identity, developing the international wine trade and establishing the first classifications of châteaux. The 17th and 18th centuries constituted the golden age with the construction of the magnificent neoclassical architectural complex that is today a world heritage site, financed by the prosperous Atlantic triangular trade. This era forged the characteristic urban elegance and Bordeaux savoir-vivre.
Modern era
