Botswana is an extraordinary landlocked country located in the heart of Southern Africa. It is world famous for its pioneering model of conservation and low-impact ecotourism, home to the legendary Okavango Delta (a unique river oasis in the desert), the gigantic elephant herds of Chobe National Park, the arid vastness of the Kalahari and the prehistoric salt flats of Makgadikgadi.
Boarding a 'mokoro' (the traditional flat-bottomed canoe propelled with a long pole by a local guide or 'poler') is the ultimate Okavango experience. Silently, at water level and among papyrus and giant water lilies, you can discover tiny reed frogs, kingfishers and elephants drinking on the shore without disturbing the peace of the ecosystem.
Chobe National Park is home to more than 120,000 elephants. Embarking on a safari cruise in the late afternoon allows you to see unforgettable scenes: entire herds of pachyderms swimming across the river with their trunks raised like a snorkel, huge crocodiles sunbathing, and families of hippos in full activity.
On the vast salt flats of Makgadikgadi, colonies of wild meerkats are accustomed to non-threatening human presence. At dawn, when they come out of their burrows to warm themselves with the first rays of the sun, it is common for them to climb on the heads or shoulders of visitors, using them as an improvised watchtower to watch for possible predators.
Rising imposingly from the sands of the Kalahari, the four hills of Tsodilo are a supreme spiritual enclave for the San people and the Hambukushu. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this prehistoric sanctuary is home to more than 4,500 cave paintings up to 20,000 years old depicting elands, rhinos and ritual hunting scenes.
Much of the Okavango campgrounds are only accessible by air. Scenic flights in low-altitude Cessna small planes reveal the true scale of this inland delta: an endless tapestry of turquoise canals, forested islands, trails created by hippos, and herds of buffalo running across the floodplains.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is the second largest reserve in the world. In its fossil valleys such as Deception Valley, safaris allow you to spot the legendary Kalahari lions (famous for their large size and dense dark manes), running cheetahs, cape oryx and brown hyenas.

View full guideBotswana consciously applies a 'high value, low ecological impact' policy to avoid overcrowding. The lodges and safari camps in the Okavango and Moremi are top-notch and operate on exclusive private concessions, making costs higher than in other African countries. For tighter budgets, 4x4 safari with a roof tent or public camps in Chobe and Maun is an excellent alternative.
Light bush planes are used to travel between the Okavango camps. These aircraft have strict weight limits (usually between 15 and 20 kg per person, including hand luggage) and require soft suitcases without a rigid structure or wheels to fit them into the small cargo compartments.
You drive on the left. To travel on your own ('self-drive') in reserves such as Chobe, Moremi or Kalahari, an authentic 4x4 with a gearbox, air compressor, shovel, unblocking irons and satellite phone is essential. It is vital to reduce tire pressure when entering deep sand roads and not traveling with a single vehicle in remote areas.
